Procedure 1 - Choosing a Repair Facility Interview at least three adults that have been driving for at least ten years each. Ask ques- tions related to choosing repair facilities (e.g., Where do you take your vehicle for service? Why do you take your vehicle there? What do you look for when choosing a repair facility?). Use a phone, tablet, or computer to access the Internet. Go to ASE’s YouTube Channel online at www.youtube.com/asetests . Click on Videos . Ask ques- tions related to repair invoices and estimates (e.g., What do you expect to see on a repair invoice? Do you have any old repair invoices I could review? Did you ever have a dispute with an auto repair shop regarding a repair? If so, what did you do?). q Use a phone, tablet, or computer to access the Internet. q Complete an Internet search using Auto Repair Law as the search phrase. Michigan Department of State has a well designed brochure titled A Guide to the Auto Repair Law – For Mechanics and Repair Facilities . Complete an Internet search to fi nd this brochure that is available online. Read the brochure. q Repair invoices should have the vehicle’s VIN, year, make, model, odometer reading, and date of repair. It should also list parts and labor costs, the name of the parts installed, guarantee (if applicable), and whether the parts were rebuilt, new, or used. R EPAIR I NVOICE /W ORK O RDER q Obtain a blank Repair Invoice/Work Order. Use the one in Appendix G or one that your instructor provides to you. q Work with a partner. Take turns role playing. One person acts as a customer the other acts as a service writer. It is the job of the service writer to complete the Repair Invoice/Work Order to include customer information, vehicle identifying information, customer concerns, related service history, possible causes, and proposed corrections. It is the job of customer to clearly convey to the service writer the vehicle’s problems. After you play one role, switch and play the other. q Log off your device.
