Activity 2: Evaluating Quantitative Information The Key Messages on page 3 could be viewed as the authors’ conclusions. These are conclusions that could be reached based on the information presented in the article. ● Quantitative (numerical) information can be thought of as the authors’ evidence. State at least one quantitative value that is reported by the authors in the passage on pages 6-10. Why do you think this quantitative value was included? What Key Message from page 3 does this quantitative evidence support? In your own words, describe how the quantitative evidence supports the Key Message. Quantitative Value The quantitative value I found was 40 (page 8) Reason for Inclusion The reason this number was included is because it tells us the total economic value dollars per hectare. It also tells us commonly measured economic values and Nonmarket and other economic values in Croatia, Italy, and Portugal. Key Message (Verbatim) I feel like one of the best key messages is the second one “Humans have made unprecedented changes to ecosystems system in recent decades to meet growing demands for food, fresh water, fiber and energy”. Supporting Evidence The Venn Diagram shows most of the growing demands listed above. ● Study the Key Messages on page 3 and the graphs included in pages 6-10. Graphs provide a visual way of presenting evidence to support a conclusion. Identify a Key Message that is supported by one of these graphs. What evidence does the graph provide in support of the Key Message? Key Message (verbatim) The net benefits from the more sustainably managed ecosystems are greater than those from the converted ecosystems. Title of the graph Economic benefits under alternate management practices. Supporting Evidence Looking at the graph each location had a greater net value with sustainably managed ecosystems. ● Describe any evidence provided by the authors that allows a reader to evaluate the credibility of the quantitative information included in this article. What additional steps might a reader take to further evaluate the credibility of the quantitative information? There is work included from over 1,360 experts and the book states “each part of the assessment has been scrutinized by governments, independent scientists and other experts” (preface) making the information in the book most credible.
