Lost Pines Outfitters is a small business that makes use of an online website that also has a physical location that specializes in outdoor clothing for customers looking for quality and affordability. Below are some key features for their system.
Description
Fulfillment Department:
An associate from the Fulfillment center assigns tracking numbers and packages orders to be shipped.
Online Portal:
Where customer can shop and order from the comfort of their own home.
Retail Store:
where customers of LPO can go to shopping inperson.
Warehouse:
where LPO keeps its products and where the warehouse associate picks items from.
Warehouse Associate
: The warehouse associate reviews the customer order from the warehouse
computer and then views where to find the product using the inventory tracking system. The warehouse associate then picks the item from the warehouse, updates the inventory system and then sends the order to the fulfillment department.
Warehouse Computer:
The warehouse computer is used to review orders made by customers through the LPO online portal and to update/modify the inventory tracking system.
The online ordering system that LPO uses is very user friendly and easy to adjust or learn. The process starts when the customer uses LPO’s website to place an order for any item they want.

The order heads to the warehouse computer where it is verified and processed by an associate. The associate then uses LPO’s inventory tracking system to find the item inside of the warehouse
and exactly what shelf it should be on. The associate takes the item from the shelves and proceeds to update the inventory tracking system to display that the customer’s order has began the process of shipping by first getting picked off the shelf. The warehouse associate proceeds to send the customer’s order to the fulfillment center where it is packed up and assigned a tracking number by a fulfillment associate. The associate then will ship the order via the carrier and then the fulfillment center updates the status of shipment by changing in their computer system so that
the status goes from processing to shipped. The customer will then receive the package to that then the employee updates shipment to delivered status within the system. When that process is done, the employee then will send a “thank you” card to the customer and on it, it will ask if the customer can leave a review based on their experience. LPO’s retail system for customer purchases is similarly easy and to the point. The customer will enter Lost Pine Outfitter’s physical location as opposed to their website. The customer will look around the store, browsing,
and see if there is anything they would like to purchase or not. If they decide yes, then the customer brings the item up to register to check out. The LPO cashier then asks if the customer is
part of LPO’s rewards system and if they found everything they were looking for. The customer will then give the cashier their answer regarding the rewards program and then the cashier will inform the customer of the total, including tax. The customer will then pay with cash or card and at the same time that this transaction is happening the LPO employee is folding the item that the customer is purchasing and asks if the customer would like a bag. The customer will then get a receipt of the transactions and with the receipt will proceed to walk towards the door. A feedback

loop present in this system is when a customer receives a package and when a customer places an order. Another feedback loop in this system is when the associate updates the tracking information when the package has been shipped. A third feedback loop current in the retail system is when the employee asks the customer how they would like to pay.
Recommendations
The first issue the CEO is experiencing is problems between LPO’s inventory database system and the inventory tracking system at their physical retail store. A recommendation I would make regarding this problem would be to make sure all technology linked to the inventory is to be regularly and frequently updated after any and all sales. The sales associates need to ensure all items leaving the store are accounted for and are quickly and effectively logged in the inventory database system. The lack of communication seems like it is the main concern the business has as well. Information is needed to be more available between the workers at the front of the house
, the warehouse associates and management team on a more consistent and effective manner.
The second issue is regarding there only being a sole computer for the warehouse to have to use. Delays and maintenance are expected and likely when only having a single, functioning computer seems to be the norm. The first course of action is to get a second or third computer system up and running for the warehouse so that maintenance downtime is no longer a concern. The lack of more computers could also be attributed to the discrepancies the CEO is starting to notice. Associates may be unable to modify information in the inventory tracking system due to

system maintenance downtime, therefore causing a discrepancy between the actual number of inventory items and what the system says they have in stock.
Conclusion
Systems Thinking is an effective way to visualize the steps taken within any system. It provides a visual so that you can see into the future or either see where things are going wrong or where something need improvement. It would give you the chance to see the cause and effect of any situation and shows you in real-time how a small change can make or break an entire system. System Thinking gives you the chance to envision a fix to a current system or to create something entirely new. It will allow you to see where optimizations can be had and where your problems are so you can visually see if done the right way.
