Module 6: Writing Assignment FOR 550: Ethics in Forensic Science
2
The definition of a whistle-blower is an individual who reports misconduct or unethical wrongdoing outside normal internal communication
to publicly announce the problems faced by an organization (Bowen, 2017). The purpose is for someone outside or inside the organization to take action in regard to stopping the organization from doing illegal acts and making sure everyone is safe (Bowen, 2017). There’s some questions whistle-blowers need to ask themselves before taking that step, such as asking themselves if the issue is a serious problem or could it be fixed without taking that step, or is there enough documented evidence, or even how would this affect their family and affiliates once one takes that step (Bowen, 2017). Whistle-blowers must ask themselves if they want to be open or to keep their identity a secret and if one knows the appropriate person to report to (Bowen, 2017). It’s important to know the consequences that come when becoming a whistle-blower, and there’s certain guidelines to follow when reporting misconduct. One should not make a report to advance his or her’s career or for any revenge towards an individual (Bowen, 2017). A whistle-blower should be creditable and reliable with their documented evidence and use confidential reporting tools, such as reporting to a whistle-
blower hotline. An individual can be seen as a hero or traitor depending on who is speaking on the situation and their relationship with the organization (Bowen, 2017).
