Assignment 8: Responding to Cybersecurity Incidents Learning Objectives and Outcomes Analyze responses to cybersecurity incidents when responders face uncertainty. Assignment Requirements When faced with a serious security incident or event, it’s essential for the first responder and the incident response team (IRT) to remain calm and analyze the situation. That can be a difficult task when a ransomware attack is spreading through an organization’s computer systems and network, or a tornado is bearing down on a critical data center, and you don’t know how to respond appropriately. 1. What would you suggest to an organization after an entry-level cybersecurity professional took the wrong actions to stop a security incident from proceeding because there was no clear process to follow? (Minimum two paragraph response)   When an entry-level cybersecurity professional takes the wrong actions to stop a security incident due to a lack of clear processes, it's important for the organization to take a proactive approach. Firstly, the organization should provide proper training and guidance to their cybersecurity professionals. This includes educating them on incident response protocols, best practices, and the importance of following established procedures. By investing in training programs and certifications, the organization can ensure that their professionals have the necessary knowledge and skills to handle security incidents effectively. Secondly, the organization should establish a clear incident response plan. This plan should outline the step-by-step procedures to be followed in the event of a security incident. It should include escalation paths, communication channels, and a clear chain of command. Regular drills and simulations can also
help familiarize the team with the process and identify any gaps or weaknesses. Lastly, the organization should encourage a culture of continuous learning and improvement. This includes fostering an environment where professionals feel comfortable asking for help and sharing their experiences. Regular debriefings and post-incident analysis can help identify areas for improvement and refine the incident response process over time. 2. When facing a disaster that’s in play, do you think critical thinking skills or ethics are the more important techniques to apply? Why? (Minimum two paragraph response) When facing a disaster in real-time, both critical thinking skills and ethics are crucial techniques to apply. Critical thinking skills help in analyzing the situation, identifying potential risks and impacts, and making informed decisions. This is especially important in high- pressure situations where quick and accurate assessments are needed to minimize damage and protect assets. At the same time, ethics play a vital role in guiding decision-making during a disaster. Ethical considerations ensure that actions taken prioritize the well-being of individuals, both within and outside the organization. It helps in balancing the immediate needs of the situation with the long-term consequences and potential harm to stakeholders. Ethical decision-making promotes transparency, accountability, and integrity, which are essential in building trust and maintaining the organization's reputation. critical thinking skills enable
effective decision-making, while ethics provide a moral compass to guide actions during a disaster. Both techniques are essential and should be applied together to ensure a well-rounded and responsible response to any critical event.
