Scenario
Like any big city, Los Angeles has to deal with illegal drugs. Of course, many of those drugs come from outside the city. Some
drugs come over the border from Mexico. Some are manufactured in illegal labs around the United States. Within California,
growers have hidden illegal marijuana farms in state and national parks. The Los Angeles Police Department can target drug
problems within the city. However, they don’t have the jurisdiction or resources to stop the influx of drugs from outside the city.
Prompt
What agencies might the Los Angeles police want to collaborate with to address these problems? What barriers might make this
collaboration difficult?
My Answer:
Some agencies that the Los Angeles police might want to collaborate with to address these problems are the DEA, the
FBI, and any neighboring police departments and other communities where the drugs could be domestically coming
over. Some barriers that might make this collaboration difficult are limited resources, the difficulty of coordinating the
efforts between everyone working to help solve the case, and the issues involving the responsibilities and jurisdiction of
the police and DEA. Furthermore, if the case is serious enough then the other agencies might start to fight over the case
to try to take the potential merit that solving the case could give them(so, in other words, if the case is an important
enough case, then instead of just sharing the case they would think of each other as competition to try to take all of the
rewards for solving the case for themselves due to greed) there's also the potential of the culprits making it harder to
catch them by acting more sneakily with more discreetness due to potentially being more on edge after noticing that
there are more lookouts now.
