Christmas has changed in many ways since the technology of the internet has become so
popular and so many people are utilizing its many facets globally.
We looked through a
historical lens to see the ways Christmas has evolved over time and it brings forth some
traditional ways that people celebrated Christmas in the past and how the internet has impacted
these traditions.
We are looking now at how internet technology has impacted various
institutions at Christmas times.
I think it is important to look through a social science lens to get
a complete understanding of how institutions are impacted at Christmas time.
First, we will look
at the institution of marriage, then church, and lastly schools through a social science lens to
understand better the impact that the internet has had on these institutions at Christmas time.
We will first look into Christmas in the institution of marriage through the social science
lens and how the internet has impacted marriages at Christmas time.
It seems that the struggle to
find time for each other and families has been strained in the past due to Christmas.
Too many
Christmas tasks and errands are projected onto one parent in marriages or financial stresses to
keep up with gift giving and buying all the latest trending gifts can create matrimonial strain
currently and historically.
The ways that husbands and wives interact in a marriage is heavily
impacted through the internet.
Couples have seen less strain in this way since the internet.
Many families are seeing in-laws through virtual celebrations which takes some of the pressures
that forced visits from in-laws can hold away.
There are less tasks to be physically taken care of
such as gift wrapping, shopping, sending of Christmas cards, cooking, and cleaning.
The internet
and some simple clicks can remedy each of these strains and stresses.
This is taking some of the
busy errands and demand for perfect interactions with loved ones in-person to a new and
minimal standard.
The costs of doing all this online can be extensive but the benefits seem to
outshine the costs for some marriages.
The internet and all it has to offer at Christmas time may
have helped the interactions between couples to feel less strain and stress[ CITATION Jim17 \l
1033 ].
The ways that internet has impacted churches at Christmas time through a social science
lens are many.
There has been an expansion of worshipers at Christmas due to internet and
social media.
Attendance rates have soared, and events have been heavily populated through net
working and internet collaboration through social media platforms.
Some are placing strategic
internet messages that impacted people to feel a need for fellowship and worshiping in a group
setting. Having Christmas services virtually has opened up the circle of worship from in person
to global heights.
Internet has impacted churches and interactions within congregations in a way
that has been extended to people from all over the world[CITATION THO17 \l 1033 ].
There has
been a positive increase in church goers during the season through internet.
Lastly, we can see how internet has impacted Christmas in schools. There has been laws
about Christmas in schools and it leaves educators in a position that can be hard to determine
what is considered appropriate in schools during the Christmas holiday.
One thing that has
helped teachers to collaborate and determine what is acceptable and what others are doing in
their district is social media platforms.
Teachers can talk with other educators for advice or to
see what other districts are doing.
When trying to stay within guidelines and still educate the
students about Christmas the internet has been an unparalleled collaboration outlet for teachers in
some areas[ CITATION Eli22 \l 1033 ].
There are many people that find it hard not to go full
bore with decorations and holiday traditions in schools, but law keeps the ways schools interact
at Christmas at an educational level only.
The internet has helped to determine the fine line of
what is acceptable through social media platform collaboration.
