Unit 11 Forum
Find a video of a public speaker that you think is effective and persuasive. (Ted Talks
are a great source.) Analyze the speaker's performance, consider:
What elements of the presentation stood out?
What was strongest: the presentation's content or the presenter's
mannerisms?
Did the presenter use visual aids? Did they support the presenter's content?
Did the speaker engage the audience? If so, how?
How can you apply these exemplars to your own presentation (in this course
and in the future)?
Craft your analysis into a few paragraphs and paste a link to the video and your written
analysis into the Forum post.
Hi all,
I am selecting a Ted Talk by Amanda Burden, Principal at Bloomberg
Associates, an international consulting service founded by Michael
Bloomberg as a philanthropic venture to help city governments improve the
quality of life for citizens in global cities of the world
Q1. The elements of the presentation that stood out would be the knowledge
and information that Ms Burden has about a diverse set of parks and how
passionately she speaks about them. This knowledge that reflects in her talk.
I also really liked how her conversation is people-centric and gives much
importance to how a public space is most useful to the people using it
Q2. Both the presenters content and her mannerisms clearly stood out in the
Ted Talk mentioned above. Her knowledge and passion toward her work is
visible through her words and body language.
Q3. Yes, the speaker supported her talk with effective usage of graphical
data and design drawings/renderings to clearly state her points of emphasis.
The visuals were helpful in better understanding both the data and project
work presented.
Q4. The speaker is a respectable designer and a very close aide to ex-Mayor
of New York City, Mayor Bloomberg. Her thoughts were very well respected
by the audience and clearly commanded and engagement toward the talk.
Her emphasis on how the High Line was carried forward and executed, was a
topic of major interest.
Q5. As a Designer and an Architectural manager, her content and
mannerisms within the presentation were highly inspiring. Her emphasis on
data and how to present the same in an engaging manner is something that I
would learn and pick up from the Ted Talk. An ardent follower of her work
and career, I picked up on Ms. Burdens presentation, which had some
important points about body language and flow of speech that one needs to
carry throughout the presentation.
