Report
Roadster Corp.'s SNMP Elements, Wi-Fi & VPN Shanta D. Wilburn South University Online MIS6262: Network Operations Management Dr. Randall Arvay November 14, 2023
Roadster Corp.'s SNMP Elements, Wi-Fi & VPN Now that the tools, protocols, and technologies have been identified for the expansion of Roadster Corp’s global locations, it is time to set in place the communication protocols that will enhance the networking solutions for those expansions. One way that Roadster Corporation can ensure that the expansion of its network is being managed appropriately is through implementing a Simple Network Management Protocol or SNMP. This protocol has become a crucial part of many enterprise IT environments because it lends a known language for managing the devices within their network (What is SNMP, n.d.). SNMP is defined as a protocol that gives organizations a way to monitor and control the devices on the network, and those devices include the routers, switches, modems, and printers to name a few (What is SNMP, n.d.). With there being multiple locations of Roadster Corp., the company must have ways to view data anywhere in the world through an internet connection so that orders can be checked, status of devices can be checked at one time, and to be able to configure devices in a remote location. After establishing the design document of WAN connections, tools and protocols, technologies to be used, and the security and performance considerations for Roadster Corp. it must be expanded to include communication protocols. Therefore, this report will extend the design document to include SNMP agents, traps, security, and MIB objects. It will further describe the secure wireless deployments and the VPN deployments (South University Online, 2023). SNMP agents, traps, security and MIB objects. As Roadster Corp. expands its network to include more locations and offices of operations it can implement the communication protocol known as SNMP to manage their local area network. The devices that Roadster will include within the network to be managed are the
servers, routers, switches, firewalls, and Wi-Fi access points (SNMP – Simple, n.d.). This will enable the network to send and receive management information within their local are network and the wide area network environment. Roadster Corp. should implement this protocol by utilizing the UDP protocol because it will have error-checking services and it does not require recovery services, but it will send “datagrams” even if the recipient receives it or not (SNMP – Simple, n.d., p. 1). The Management Information Bases or MIBs will determine what will be collected from the devices along with what can be changed and configured. The three versions of SNMP will be as follows: SNMPv1 – This will facilitate the management of information specification. SNMPv2 – This version will be implemented to lend support of more effective ways to handle errors. SNMPv3 – This implementation will enhance security and privacy for the network. To further the implementation of SNMP elements the main components that will be enabled within Roadster’s Corp environment are the following: SNMP managed devices and resources- The switches, routers, firewalls, servers, and Wi-Fi access points will be the devices that the agent will run on. SNMP agent – This will be operated on the printers and other hardware being monitored by the SNMP, and it will enable the network to collect data on computer usage, bandwidth use, and their disk space. SNMP manager – This element component will act as the centered management station that runs the application on various operating systems to regularly request agents to send updates on continuous intervening times.

Management information base – This will describe all devices that will be monitored, and within the MIB there will be an OID that will be used to depict between devices of the MIB and will access the MIB objects. (Scarpati, 2021). n The feature within the SNMP that will be used to manage and monitor the devices on the network is called an SNMP trap. The SNMP trap “is a message that is sent from a device to the SNMP system without being requested by the system” (Author, 2023, p. 1). This feature is alerted when things such as a link is not functioning, or a power failure happens. They also include information about that event like which device the misfunctions happens, the time it
happened, and how crucial the event is. The type of trap that Roadster Corp. will utilize is an enterprise-specific trap because it can be customized to the liking of the organization. By Roadster using SNMO traps it will allow the network to be monitored in real time, administrators can deploy preventive measures to prevent any data loss or the system being down. For this to happen, it is important that network administrators monitor the traffic of the SNMP so that any security breaches are detected. It will also prevent unauthorized access to the system, and that will be covered by using SNMPv3 because it will provide encryption, ensure secure communication among devices and the management system (Author, 2023). The following are the steps to take to implement SNMP traps: 1. Use SNMPv3 2. Configure SNMP Access Control 3. Configure SNMP Trap Parameters 4. Define SNMP Trap Thresholds 5. Enable SNMP Traps on all network devices. 6. Use a Network Management System 7. Test SNMP Traps by Unknown Author is licensed under
Secure Wireless Deployment Today, the world is connected by the internet and devices that rely on wireless connectivity. The number of devices that rely on the internet will only continue to grow for personal use and especially for organizational use. Therefore, it is imperative that an enterprise such as Roadster Corporation deploys a security strategy that will decrease the potential for their system and wireless connectivity to be exploited (Securing Wireless Network, 2021). When a wireless connection is breached it can give breachers access to personal information, financial data, and can result in the organization being sued. Therefore, the following measures should be put in place to secure Roadster’s wireless connection: A. Change default passwords by replacing them with passwords that are not saved on devices or the system. B. Implement restrictions to access the system and devices that will only allow authorized users to utilize the network. C. Implement complicated encryptions to the data included on the network. D. Change the Service Set Identified or SSID to something uncommon so that it is difficult for breachers to find the network. E. Install a layered firewall on devices and network. F. Install antivirus software and ensure it is up to date regularly. G. When file sharing is used ensure that a specific directory for file sharing is implemented and will not allow unauthorized directions to be accessed. H. Ensure all access point software patches are up to date. I. Monitor the internet provider’s wireless security options. J. Connect to the network by using a VPN.

VPN Deployment Roadster Corporation will gain vast benefits by deploying a VPN on its network. It will allow the company to effectively secure their global network. In fact, by not deploying a VPN it will enable applications or websites to keep track of any activity done via online access. Once that is done it can keep track of everything being transmitted over the wireless network, and without it the network devices will experience interruptions to browsing (Benefits of a, n.d.). By Roadster Corporation utilizing a VPN it will eliminate people, software, and databases from gaining access to their wireless connection. To deploy the VPN Roadster should take the following steps: 1. Purchase a VPN service. 2. Create an account with that service. 3. Download the software on all devices. 4. Log into that account. 5. Enter the security key of the two-step authentication code. 6. Connect to a VPN server. 7. Run a speed test. 8. Utilize the tutorial guide within the app to make the user familiar with the VPN service. (Vidgerman & Turner, 2023, p. 1).
