Unit 11 Forum
Find a video of a public speaker that you think is effective and persuasive. (Ted Talks
are a great source.) Analyze the speaker's performance, consider:
What elements of the presentation stood out?
What was strongest: the presentation's content or the presenter's
mannerisms?
Did the presenter use visual aids? Did they support the presenter's content?
Did the speaker engage the audience? If so, how?
How can you apply these exemplars to your own presentation (in this course
and in the future)?
Craft your analysis into a few paragraphs and paste a link to the video and your written
analysis into the Forum post.
Rebeca Hwang is the Ted Speaker I choose.

What elements of the presentation stood out?
The public speaker, Rebeca Hwang, opened the discussion on personal
identification with cultural difference and commonality by relating a tale of
her grandmother's dying wish—to be buried in Korea, where they were both
raised—in her story. She used that example to further the conversation of
cultural identification by sharing her own experience of establishing a
"home" for herself. She is of Korean origin, was raised in Argentina, and
received her education in the United States. The stories she related during
her presentation were particularly captivating and persuasive, drawing the
audience's focus to the points she was trying to make. Additionally, she
viewed the idea of "home" as a real bearer for her cultural identity, which
made the abstract idea simple to comprehend. She spoke in simple, lucid
terms, and her demeanor was composed and assured. Additionally, she
concluded her speech by telling the same tale of her grandmother from a
different angle, which gave her speech a cohesive and finished appearance.
What was strongest: the presentation's content or the presenter's
mannerisms?
My opinion is that her topic was the strongest, and her demeanor served as a
good foundation for the speech. The information was intriguing because the
author presented personal anecdotes and life experiences that might be
relevant to other people's lives because comparable emotions are always
experienced in similar circumstances. Her relaxed and assured demeanor
served as a strong complement to her articulate words.
Did the presenter use visual aids? Did they support the presenter's
content?
The presenter didn't make use of any visual aids, no. The speaker shared her
ideas on cultural identification in a diverse, global society using simple,
relatable language and a number of real-life examples.
Did the speaker engage the audience? If so, how?
The audience was entertained by Rebeca Hwang, but not in a participatory
way. Throughout the entire speech, she made various jokes to engage her
audience and get people laughing.
How can you apply these exemplars to your own presentation (in
this course and in the future)?
The topic of my presentation might be interesting to my audience and make
the abstract subject intelligible in the future, thus I believe I will make an
effort to connect it to my personal experiences or any other real-life stories I
am aware of. Along with this, I'll pay attention to the flow of my speech,
adding in a few jokes and questions to engage the audience. Last but not
least, it is crucial to project confidence since you can only expect others to
trust what you have to say if you have complete faith in yourself.
