Appendix A: Case study ’Bean There’ is a café based in Sydney’s northern suburbs. The café has experienced major growth in the past year with an extension of the customer seating area and a larger kitchen. The owners, Angela and Raj, employ 11 staff, four of whom are engaged on a fulltime basis, three part-time and four are casual. As the business has grown, several issues have emerged relating to work health and safety. These include: No agreed process to identify hazards and manage risks. Angela and Raj have taken on most of the safety-related responsibilities and their staff have very little involvement in safety-related issues. In particular, casual staff have no involvement in safety-related matters. No set induction training for new staff with new employees expected to identify staff working practices as they work. Until recently, the café has only had minor incidents and accidents. However, last week a casual staff member was badly burnt on the hand and lower arm when they slipped on a wet floor while moving hot liquid. The incident could have been much worse, and Angela and Raj have decided to invest in a safety management system. Angela and Raj have engaged you to help them design a work health and safety management system that works for their business. They have asked you to develop: A safety policy that outlines their commitment to work health and safety. A consultation procedure that outlines how consultation will take place with their staff. Raj and Angela ask to ensure that the procedure includes detail on how all staff can be engaged in making the workplace safer. A risk management procedure that explains how hazards will be identified, risks analysed, controlled, monitored and evaluated. A brief induction for new staff which includes a short presentation on the main hazards and risks in the café and a ’How to work safely’ document or infographic of no more than two pages that can be given to new employees. Angela and Raj ask that the document contains easy to understand graphics and information on any or all the following risks: o Working safely in the kitchen, including hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE). o Opening and closing the café, including security procedures. o Safe manual handling techniques. o Slips, trips and falls.
