Place-Based and Arts Integrated Unit Assignment Spring 2023 ED 206 Worksheet 5: Integrating Community and/Local Resources (Core Practices E/G) What community-based resources are available for you to integrate into your unit? Remember that this could be a place, a person, the knowledge and experiences of your students. It should be something that is found in your community and not found elsewhere, that connects your topic with your students’ lives. (You can use what you brainstormed in your Core Practice Journal, Core Practice E or G!) The community-based resources that are available to me are different buildings and people in the community. I could ask parents to be guest speakers and share their roles in the community. I could as well reach out to local buildings and ask them to do presentations, such as firefighters and policemen. How will you and your students access this resource? Do you need to go to it, or can the resource come to you? What arrangements need to be made in advance? My students and I will access this resource by first asking for volunteers or arranging for visitors to come into the classroom. I would have to make arrangements for times and days when these visitors could come. I think it would be fun to also incorporate a field trip into this unit. For instance, we could take a field trip to the local fire station. How will you use this resource in a lesson to build background knowledge on your topic? Describe your plans for resource integration in as much detail as possible. I will use this resource in a lesson to build background knowledge on my topic by incorporating the different roles these people have in the community. Such as a firefighter helps the community keep safe and helps when there are fires or someone is hurt. The firefighters have a responsibility to the city and are an important part of the people that keep the community safe. If we go to the firehouse or have a guest speaker who is a firefighter the students would learn deeper what their job is and what they do.
Place-Based and Arts Integrated Unit Assignment Spring 2023 ED 206 Worksheet 6: Visible Thinking/Protocol (Core Practice B) + Arts Integration Visible Thinking Routine or Protocol Identify a visible thinking routine or protocol that you believe would deepen the students’ understanding of the concepts of your place-based unit. Refer back to Core Practice B readings to help you! I think that Think-Pair-Share would deepen the student’s understanding of the concepts in my place-based unit. As we go through different topics or review different things the students can think about ongoing activities, share with a partner, and then share as a class. How will you use this visible thinking routine or protocol in your learning plan? I will use this visible thinking routine in my learning plan by using in at specific points, Such as if I have a guest speaker, when we are debriefing, it could be beneficial to use think-pair-share to help students understand the information they were just given. Arts Integration Identify and describe how you could integrate an arts strategy (drama, music, dance, cultural arts, or visual arts) in your place-based unit. The art strategy that I was planning to use in my place-based unit was visual arts. I was planning on having students create an illustration as part of an assessment and project. Describe your plans for how, where you will use this integration strategy in your unit. I will use this strategy to assess students’ understanding of the unit. The students are to create an illustration that goes along with a piece of writing describing and showing their chosen role in the community.
