Within this Assignment is a two part analysis of the Edmonton Clinic
Health Academy (ECHA), located in Edmonton, Alberta. In Part A, different building systems are examined and documented,
answering a set of questions that allow for clarity on how the building
functions. In Part B, existing fixtures, appliances and lighting fixtures
are documented with the selection of new products that are based
on guidelines outlined by LEED, furthering the building’s
sustainability.
“In February, 2016, the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy was
awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
Silver designation by the Canadian Green Building Council.”

PART A:
The space is heated and cooled by a Variable Air
Volume
(VAV) box and supplies air at variable
temperatures and airflow rates from an Air
Handling Unit
(AHU).

HOW IS THE
SPACE HEATED
AND COOLED?
This particular VAV unit consists of reheat coils
which provides heating; however, instead of using
hot water in this system, glycol is used instead.
Although glycol is a more expensive choice, it is
used to prevent damage to HVAC equipment due
to freezing and corrosion. Fig. 2
Fig. 3
PART A:
When it comes to energy conservation, the biggest
contribution is that each lighting fixture in this
office is LED lighting and after a certain time, all of
the lights in the building go on a motion sensor
system. Assignment 1: Analysis of Building

WHAT MEASURES
ARE TAKEN TO
CONSERVE
ENERGY?
PART A:
The office manages waste through a Closed Loop
Water System
. It is designed to recycle, filter, and
reuse the water through a treated steam process. Assignment 1: Analysis of Building

HOW DOES THE
OFFICE MANAGE
WASTE?
Closed Loop Water systems are extremely efficient,
have great longevity and “can drastically reduce
the amount of water needed from municipal
water supplies.” (Lakeside Equipment Corporation,
2022). Fig. 4

PART A:
The office does not use any unique
telecommunication tools. However, they do
use common telecommunication tools, such
as telephones, fiber optics and the Internet. Assignment 1: Analysis of Building

IS THE OFFICE USING
ANY UNQIUE
TELECOMMUNICATION
TOOLS?
PART A:
The office is equipped with multiple fire extinguishers
throughout, as well as illuminated exit signs and access
to stairwells that lead to the exterior of the building. The
office contains tons of sprinklers, is a concrete building
and most partitions are firewall rated. There is also a
dedicated muster point that is shown through photos at
various points in the office.

PART A:
There are no signs that thermal comfort is
not achieved in this office. The staff seemed
comfortable, the materials in the office
weren't cold to the touch, and the
temperature from room to room was
consistant.

Overall, when looking back on this assignment, it proved to be extremely informative and I enjoyed gathering all of the
information needed. At first, this assignment did seem to be quite long and daunting; however, when I broke it down and
organized what I actually needed, it wasn’t as bad as I had originally anticipated. Assignment 1: Analysis of Building

RATIONALE
The biggest challenge I faced started with the first step of this assignment, which was finding an office building that would let
me in to collect the data I needed, or had someone there that was knowledgable enough about this topic to answer the set of
questions required. After being on the hunt for a couple of weeks and being denied a couple of times, I decided to seek out my
mom for help as she works in the offices of the ECHA building. She was able to get in contact with the Facilities and Operations
manager and he was more than willing to take us up to the sixth floor where all of the equipment is located. I was extremely
excited to tour this building as I knew it was LEED certified and is a very established and well-known building. I found myself
taking a ton of pictures of everything; however, I wish I had taken some more descriptive notes, or even marked up the images
with descriptions as I found myself forgetting little pieces of information that the manager had shared with me. I truly was just
so fascinated to be there and couldn’t believe how much equipment was present in this massive room. If I were to give any advice to future students completing this assignment, the first and main thing that comes to mind is
securing an office space as soon as possible. Even if it seems like there is a lot of time until the assignment due date, the time
flies by and it could take a couple of tries before you get someone willing to let you tour the potential office space. Also, ensure
lots of photos are taken, but include annotations, descriptions, or anything that will help you remember all of the information
given, as it is a lot and can be confusing.
