1. Compare and contrast player-centric game design and designer-centric game
design. How does a player-centric game assist with player immersion?
Player centric design prioritizes the player's experience and preferences. It involves understanding player behavior, motivations, and feedback to create an enjoyable and engaging game. Player-centric design often leads to games that are intuitive, responsive to player input, and provide a sense of agency. In contrast, the designer-
centric approach emphasizes the vision and intentions of the game designer. The focus is on realizing the designer's creative vision and often involves a more structured and controlled approach to gameplay. This can lead to games with a more curated experience, but may not always align perfectly with player preferences. Often times player-centric is best for immersion because that is what it’d designed around.
2. Why is it important that a game present the player with meaningful choices? What does a game designer mean when they say a choice is “meaningful?” Do you think that game mechanics can be a form of meaningful choice? Explain and provide at least one example of a meaningful choice, either hypothetical or found in a real game.
It is important that games present the player with meaningful choices because they can cause a player to feel truly immersed in the game. In order for a game to provide meaningful decisions they have to have some impact on either your emotions through proper build-up and character development or on how the game is played from that moment onwards. One form of a meaningful game decision is in Elden Ring when you decide whether or not you want to help Fia. If you decide to help Fia your experience is changed as you become one with death and try to save Godwyn The Golden. 3. Tyler explains to you, his counselor, that he wants to become a physical scientist with a focus on physics and astronomy when he grows up.
Tyler doesn’t see himself as being very creative and wants to pursue a career that
allows him to practice ‘pure logic’ skills. Explain to Tyler why creativity is a
vital part of all science and how the scientific method depends on creativity as it relates to constructing, researching, and testing hypotheses, analyzing data sets, and sharing results with colleagues and others.
Consider the scientific role game designers must take as they conduct research, create theories, and define problems across the iterative process for inspiration in your answer.
Creativity is very important as a scientist because you need to think outside of what
is considered to be true to see if there are things we don’t know yet. 4. Consider various game mechanics and elements common to massive multiplayer games, like
World of Warcraft
or
Final Fantasy XIV
. Such games include features such as mostly non-violent social hubs like cities where players often interact, dungeons or bosses that require teamwork to escape or defeat, large game environments to explore, sometimes hidden collectibles, nonlinear storytelling as players pick and choose from among large numbers of quests, optional Player versus Player combat, and others. Consider and explain which elements of massive multiplayer games appeal to specific types of players (Killers, Explorers, Socializers, and Achievers) and describe how you reached these conclusions.
Choose at least
one game element that appeals to each type of player and explain why that element appeals to that type. You may refer to elements not specifically mentioned in this question.
MMOs appeal to killers because of the bosses. MMOs appeal to explorers because of
the large worlds. MMOs appeal to socializers because of the massive amount of people that play them. MMOs appeal to achievers because there is so much to do.
