Introduction
The main objective of this lab is to be able to apply human factor principles in designing workstations and to analyze and evaluate existing workstations with focus on dimensions and layout of the workstation. It is significant because this lab encompasses everything that has been taught thus far within labs and class. Now, applying classroom knowledge and understanding of how to fit the workstation to the worker based on anthropometric data, the dimensions of the work area are very important. The textbook shows the dimensions that computer workstations should have for the chair, arm rest, height of the table, thickness of table, and popliteal height to create a safe working environment.
For visual display and control design, the purpose is to introduce some of the design factors which contribute to accurate use of visual displays and their utilization in designing, and illustrate some of the compatible relationships should be considered in designing such as controls and perceptions. Methods
Equipment
1.
Measuring Tape
2.
Paper and pencil
Procedures
Working in groups, each group will take 5 measurements of the computer designed work station based on the textbook design recommendation. Based on the data recorded and the measurements taken, make recommendations based on what the suggested measurements and layout of the workstation should be. Think about the changes need to be made to better fit the task to the worker and avoid CTD’s within the workplace. For visual display and control design, it should be noted that scale endpoints should not be changed and the smallest scale values e redesigned dials should be the same as those represented on the original dial.

Data
Results and Discussions
Overall, with workstation design, based on the anthropometric data from the textbook in comparison with the measurements taken of the computer workstation design in class, the measurements are roughly the same making it a good design. The only measurement that is far greater is the leg room area with the textbook data stating 18” and the measurement from the lab being 29”, which didn’t make much of a difference in the work area. There was no foot rest to measure in the lab so that is not accounted for. The arm rest height was measured at 6.5” and height of the table was fairly close being at 28.2” in comparison to the 32” in the textbook.
For the visual display and controls, it is more focused in the report section of this lab in problems 1-10.
Conclusions and Recommendations
Overall, the lab is really helpful in understanding how visual cues, display controls, and workstation environments all play a key role in standing how to fit the task to the worker while also understanding the human body and the anthropometric data used to build these workstation designs. Everything plays a role when designing something that will
ultimately benefit the worker. You don’t want to design focused on one thing but at the overall picture and keeping in mind how the worker is going to go through their tasks with that thought process in mind. Report
