Laila Vinti 26 October 2022 Professor Nahmens IE 1002 Ethics Case Portfolio Case 1: To bride or not to bride, that is the question Should he accept the fishing trip?
I believe Tom should accept the fishing trip if he feels comfortable enough because the sale was already finalized. Is this a case of bribery or not? I do not believe this is a case of bribery. If the sale was still pending or if the salesman had other products he wanted to sell, then the fishing trip would be a bribe to try and manipulate Tom into buying more goods. However, because the sale was finalized, I do not believe this was a case of bribery. What would have to occur for your position to change. Discuss your thoughts and arguments for your position. If Tom had yet to agree to buying the valves from the salesman, then I would believe the salesman was using the fishing trip as a bribery tactic. The same were to apply if the roles were reversed. Let’
s say Tom was looking to buy valves, but before he made any final decisions, he offered to take his salesman on a fishing trip
. I would say this is a bribe on Tom’s part in hopes to get the salesman to cut him a deal. I believe the bribery (for this particular case) would have to occur before the sale was finalized.
Case 2: What is your responsibility? What should you do in this situation and why? For starters, I would bring my concerns to my higher ups, expressing my doubt with this particular recruitment process. At this point, if no action has been taken, I would gather my information and present my concerns with the company’s Board of Directors even though my firm and I may suffer consequences. The information I would gather would be like issues the company is struggling with or areas the company is least knowledgeable about. Hopefully, the company’s Board of Directors will see my concern for the well
-being for the company rather than be offended by my passion to ensure an adequate leader for their company. As I wrote this, I got to thinking. If I had brought these concerns to my supervisor, and no action was taken, I would probably put in my two weeks. There is no legal liability on my firm if an inadequate employee is chosen, and I would most likely get fired anyway for addressing the company’s Board of Directors. Either way, I would not go to the media because that is unethical as well. Case 3: Equal Opportunity Harassment Should sexual harassment law cover same sex- heterosexual sexual harassment? Why or why not? Sexual harassment law should cover same sex-heterosexual sexual harassment. Sexual harassment should not depend on gender, nor should it depend on sexuality. If someone feels comfortable enough to make inappropriate remarks towards someone they aren’t attracted to, imagine what they would say/do to a person of interest. I believe when it comes to sexual harassment in the workplace, disregarding any case of sexual harassment is basically telling the
victim, “You are not a person, you are an employee.” Unsafe or uncomfortable work environments yield unsuccessful businesses. What implications does your answer have for our understanding of the concept of sexual harassment? Our concepts of sexual harassment imply that sexual harassment can only occur if it is towards the gender you are attracted to which is just not the case. If someone continues to make inappropriate jokes after you’ve repeatedly told them to stop, that is sexual harassment no matter the gender or sexuality. BOOKS/ARTICLES: Engineering Ethics

I believe, in a general sense, that understanding ethics as time goes on becomes easier, yet more complex at the same time. Nowadays, most people have a solid idea on what is right or wrong to do or say in the workplace. However, as the world and society evolve and advance, there are more circumstances to be considered within ethics. There are three key aspects I plan to implement in my future workplace to uphold the ethical engineering ideology. These three aspects are: have a filter, have reasonable expectations, and maintain confidence within my company. For starters, there is one easy saying that applies to all aspects of life as well as all types of people. That saying is: Think before you speak. If just 70% of the world remembered this small saying everyone learned in grade school, we would be better off. Especially in a workplace, people have become a little too comfortable expressing their opinions. Whatever the opinion may be, if you are not comfortable saying it to human resources, you probably shouldn’t say it at all. When at a job for a long period of time, employees tend to make friends and form groups. As friends, they can talk about whatever outside of work, but when at work, they should still monitor the things said, even if it is to your friend. Having no filter could cause you to offend other employees, lose your job, and honestly be viewed as unprofessional. When you work for a company, you are representing that company. You should never say anything that would shed a bad light on yourself or the company. Secondly, a big thing I believe is important to implement into my future work environments is to not give employees tasks that they are not capable of. This could result in injury, depleted morale, and poorly produced goods. If I assigned one of the forklift drivers to take care of a diesel mechanics task, that is not only endangering one of my employees but also risking expensive equipment. Moreover, repeatedly giving an employee a task they are incapable
of completing will cause them to resent their job and their superiors. Listening to what tasks your employees honestly feel comfortable or uncomfortable doing could result in efficient production and a more productive work force. Even the consumer will suffer from this lack of better judgment. For instance, let’s say a man bought a generator from our company that I had the forklift driver work on because we were short a diesel mechanic. Little did the forklift driver know, he caused the generator to become completely faulty, and when the man got home to use it, the generator injured him in some way. At that point, we are completely liable for that faulty generator and rightfully so. This hypothetical situation could have been avoided entirely from more communication between the employees and management. Employees who are assigned jobs they are capable has multiple lasting effects in the workplace. Lastly, there should be a level of trust between the company and employees when it comes to company business. Matters that are being dealt with internally do not need to be dealt with publicly as well. The public eye adds another complicated layer to whatever issue is being addressed. Discussions of concerns between employees and their superiors should be communicated in confidence and dealt with appropriately. Between quitting or going to the media with company business, the latter is worse. The company at that point has the right to sue you. Unless an employee came to me with concerns of harming themselves or others, our conversation says between us. It is my responsibility to create a safe environment where employees can communicate their concerns or suggestions. It is also my responsibility to handle their concerns to the best of my ability without disrupting the rest of the work force. Confidentiality breeds trust within a workplace. In conclusion, there are plenty of way to make sure you are following the code of ethics. Practicing ethical engineering is vital to a work environment to ensure the safety and
productivity of the employees. The three aspects I mentioned: having a filter, having realistic expectations, and having trust are just a few of the ways to practice ethical engineering.
