Lesson 9 Assignment #9
COR204
When it comes to a good drug/alcohol treatment program there must be principles
involved. There are ten principles that help creating a good drug/alcohol program. Designing an
effective drug detection program, they must establish written policies and procedures, and
communicate the details of the drug detection program both to the court staff and clients alike.
The outcomes are significantly better when policies and procedures are specified clearly in a
participant manual or handbook. Develop a client contract that clearly enumerates the
responsibilities and expectations associated with the court’s drug detection program. Select a
drug testing specimen and testing methodology that provides results that are scientifically valid,
forensically defensible, and therapeutically beneficial. Ensure that the sample collection process
supports effective abstinence monitoring practices including random, unannounced selection of
clients and the use of witnessed observation sample collection procedures.
Confirm all positive screening results using alternative testing methods, unless participant
acknowledges use. Determine sample validity to support the collection process. Sanction diluted
samples and those that indicate subversion of the collection process. Eliminate the use of urine
levels for the interpretation of client drug-use behavior. Establish drug testing results
interpretation guidelines that have a sound scientific foundation and that meet a strong
evidentiary standard. In response to drug testing results, develop therapeutic intervention
strategies that promote behavior change and support recovery. Understand that drug tests
represent only a single supervision strategy in an overall abstinence-monitoring program.
Individuals may find themselves on probation for various reasons which would lead them
to have to participate in drug/alcohol treatment programs including drug/alcohol testing.
Probation drug and alcohol testing programs vary across the United States. The programs depend
on the offenders history, compliance with any requirements or terms, and trust with your
probation officer; all of which will determine how often they will drug test the offender. These
programs are also used for as pretrial programs, believing that the information would be useful to
judicial officers when determining conditions of release, or lack thereof.
Random drug test programs for individuals on probation is imperative because it is used
as a potential deterrent against crime and as a useful tool to ensure that the probationer will
follow the guidelines of the contract and abstain from drug use. Also, probationary testing is
conducted at random to prevent the probationer from preparing for the test by flushing their
system, substituting a sample, or planning to adulterate the specimen. Having a comprehensive 5
and 10-panel drug tests is also essential because they can detect a large variety of drugs and stay
up to date with the changing drugs and drug uses.
