Tutorial Participation and Engagement (35%) This includes attendance, participation in activities as well as the completion of assignments that are designed to produce in-depth discussions. Sample tutorial tasks include creating a playlist, locating a piece of music that speaks to your identity or writing up a concert program that is centered around a particular theme and other listening activities. Assignments are to be submitted prior to tutorial sessions via the MyLS dropbox. 2. Online Discussions ( 4 x 5% = 20%) Discussions are meant to demonstrate your engagement with the lesson material in a shared and constructive way with your fellow students. While there are discussion forums in every week, only four of them will be graded. Assignment Details - MU-100-A - Music and its Contexts posts up to 250 words in length as well as a response to two or three classmates/peers; the response to your classmate can be between 50-100 words. You should post an original response to the discussion question and reply to at least two or three colleagues/peers/classmates with a thoughtful, supportive response that extends the dialogue established in the original post. You will find the discussion question in the lesson notes and also on the discussion board. The discussion board will only be available for the week in which they are posted and they will close afterwards. Each of the graded discussions is worth 5% of your final grade. Library assignment (5%) The library Assignment is an introduction to accessing research materials at Wilfrid Laurier University Library. You will be asked to access the library both physically onsite and through web portals. Further details about the library assignment and its rubric may be found in the Major Assignments folder. The library assignment will be due on September27 extension to Sept. 30 and must be submitted via MyLS dropbox. Late work will not receive full credit. 4. Essay Proposal (10%) The essay proposal consists of a one page overview of your proposed title, topic, and research question, as well as a 7 item bibliography. Feedback on this proposal is critical for the next stage of your Essay, so please read and heed the comments there. Step 1: Page 1 - essay title, topic, and introduction (250 - 500 words) Step 2: Page 2 - prepare a 7+ item bibliography. Late work will not receive full credit. 5. Final Essay (30%) You are to write a 1500 to 2000-word essay that should be developed from your essay proposal. This follow- up assignment challenges you to go deeper into your research. You will transform your essay proposal into a comprehensive research paper that expands on why the music is important to you, how it's connected to who you are, and what its contextual relevance for society. This extended assignment will further develop your research and analytical skills as you study how music, identity, and culture are linked.
