Week 3: Project Scheduling As you know, we do not manage time but instead we manage the project schedule. Schedule can have an affect on the project cost. We have a WBS for our project that can help with managing the schedule. Once we start the process of creating a schedule on our WBS, we now need to create activities, determine resources for these activities, and determine these activities' durations. We need this and more in order to create a schedule so that we can measure the schedule properly. What methods are found in the  PMBOK ® Guide  to estimate an activity's duration? What methods are used in your organization? How closely do they align with the  PMBOK ® Guide ? What are some important considerations when creating a schedule? Professor and Class,  What methods are found in the  PMBOK ® Guide  to estimate an activity's duration?      According to PMBOK Guide, (2017), Analogous, Parametric, Three Point, Group Decision making and reserve analysis are the methods that are utilized to estimate and activity's duration.  What methods are used in your organization?      In my organization we utilize three point, analogous, and group decision making. It is also possible that Parametric has been utilized as well at the project manager level, however, in my functional department role the three I have mentioned have been mainly utilized and have been successful.  How closely do they align with the  PMBOK ® Guide ?       Based off conversations with our Project Management Office, it appears that they do align closely with the PMBOK but from time to time they do tend to utilize other methods like bottom up and their expertise. Not exactly sure what that means but I assume since they have been engaged in many projects they have seen more detail than a functional contributor has.  What are some important considerations when creating a schedule?      According to the PMBOK Guide (2017), we should ensure that the activities are defined and that the duration has been estimated. It is also important to involve other contributors to the process such as key stakeholders, functional managers and other participants. This allows for their review and buy in to the schedule to ensure that the project schedule is feasible.
