Example: Telephone Pole Design
Example: Elderly
Example:
Telephone pole design institutions have several wings that are connected by a central corridor. These designs can have a physical
impact on elderly inmates. Older inmates may struggle getting around the long corridors typically present in these designs. Gaining
access to medicine and services can be problematic. These institutions can also have a psychological
impact on elderly inmates. Older inmates may feel the stress of being placed with younger inmates. They may feel more vulnerable to being attacked. There could be a sense of social isolation. And, further stress could be felt due to the inability of staff being able to gain control of a corridor in the event of a riot (Siegel & Bartollas, 2018). Further, this design could affect inmate/officer relationships
. This type of style creates a distant relationship between officers and inmates. As
a result, officers may not realize the unique needs of the elderly inmates and may have the same expectations of them as they do of the younger inmates.

Panopticon Design
Male
The Panopticon design exerts both physical and psychological impacts on male inmates. Physically, constant surveillance from a central tower creates an environment where inmates are acutely aware of potential observation, influencing their behavior to align with expected norms. Psychologically, the design induces feelings of
anxiety, stress, and vulnerability due to the pervasive sense of constant scrutiny. This heightened state of alertness and lack of privacy can impact the mental well-being of inmates. In terms of the inmate-officer relationship, the Panopticon design establishes a power dynamic where correctional officers wield significant control.
Inmates may feel powerless, fostering a more submissive attitude, while officers assume an authoritative stance symbolized by the watchful eye of the central tower. These dynamics shape the daily experiences within the facility and impact the overall atmosphere of control and surveillance (

Podular
LGBTQ+
The Podular Design in correctional facilities can have varied impacts
on LGBTQ inmates. Physically, the design offers smaller, self-
contained units, potentially providing personal space and reducing the risk of violence based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Psychologically, it may foster a sense of community if the environment is inclusive, but isolation or targeting could have negative consequences. The relationship between inmates and officers is influenced by direct interaction, presenting an opportunity for positive engagement if correctional staff are
