Unit 4 Assignment-Data Warehouse and Modeling
In your role as an IT specialist at your hospital, you have been approached by the chair of the pediatric department to assist in the creation of a database for the collection of information on a variety of childhood communicable diseases and vaccination statuses. You propose using a data warehouse, which would pull information from the hospital's clinical repository. The chairperson
is unfamiliar with these terms and asks for clarification.
1.
Explain the concept of a data warehouse and differentiate it from a clinical repository. Data warehouses are used to support decision making. It is usually a central location where data from multiple sources can be combined and organized. It stores current and historical data that is used to support decision making by making it possible to quickly and easily analyze data uploaded from operational systems. A clinical repository is used to store clinical data. “Clinical data includes patient medical records, laboratory test results, and imaging studies.” (Hecht group | the difference between a data warehouse and a clinical repository.)
Clinical data is typically used for research purposes. Clinical repositories are secondary databases where they receive data that has been originally input into other sources. The main goal of a repository is to organize data so that it can be accessed and used in the future. 2.
The chairperson states he is familiar with external data sources to find out about pediatric communicable diseases to create the database and suggest that you use those sources. Support your position regarding internal sources at the hospital being
a better choice than external sources.
Unit 4 Assignment- Data Warehouse and Modeling
Internal data sources are very important because they provide organizations with insights into their operations. In this case, they can pull the data that they have about their
pediatric communicable diseases within their hospital. Internal sources are unique to organization. “Since internal data is generated within the company, it is specific to the company’s operations and can provide a competitive advantage.” (Internal and external data: What's the difference and why it matters:). One of the biggest advantages of using internal sources is that they are free for the
organization, and it is already on hand easy to retrieve and analyze. Overall, with internal sources you already have all the information that you need to build the database that fits your healthcare organization. Different hospitals are going to have different information and it is better to tailor your database to the patients you provide services to.
