Subject Area:
Exercise Training & the Elderly
Why I Selected This Subject
: I chose this subject area because of the growing
importance of healthy aging in our society. With the elderly population representing
a big percentage of people, understanding the impact of exercise training on their
physical and mental well-being is crucial. Exercise has long been known to have
numerous benefits, and I am interested in exploring the specific ways it can enhance
the quality of life for older adults.
Brainstorming:
What I Know:
I know that regular exercise is beneficial for people of all ages. In the
context of the elderly, it can improve cardiovascular health, strength, balance, and
overall mobility. Exercise is also linked to cognitive benefits and can help in
managing chronic conditions common in older age.
What I Want to Know:
I want to explore the specific types of exercises that are most
effective for the elderly, the psychological benefits, the impact on chronic diseases,
and how to overcome barriers to exercise adoption among older adults.
Background Reading, APA Reference for Encyclopedia Article:
Anderson, N. B. (Ed.) (2004). Encyclopedia of health and behavior. (Vols. 1-2). SAGE
Publications, Inc., https://doi.org/10.4135/9781412952576
What I've Learned:
From the encyclopedia article, I learned that regular exercise
among the elderly can significantly reduce the risk of falls, improve bone density,
and enhance cognitive function. Another interesting fact is that people that are over
1
50 years old are a fast-growing segment of the population. It highlighted the
importance of tailored exercise programs considering the physical limitations and
health conditions commonly found in older individuals,
additionally, these
researchers discovered that home-based, routinely supervised methods were
typically just as effective as group- or classroom-based methods, if not more so.
Learning that maintaining participants' levels of physical activity over the phone for
up to two years in this age range was just as effective as in-person interaction is also
interesting. New Terminology:
Some new terms encountered include sarcopenia (age-related
muscle loss), proprioception (sense of body position), and geriatric syndromes
(conditions common in older age, like frailty and urinary incontinence).
Research Question
: What are the most effective and sustainable exercise programs
for improving the physical, mental, and overall well-being of the elderly population?
Preliminary Thesis Statement:
Although further research is needed, it is
hypothesized that personalized and structured exercise programs, focusing on
strength, balance, and cardiovascular activities, can significantly enhance the
physical health, cognitive function, and overall quality of life for elderly individuals.
Preliminary Outline:
1.
What are the definitions of the physical problems that occur in the elderly?
2.
What are the
Barriers to exercise adoption among the elderly?
3.
What are the correct methods to accurately collect data and design a research
plan? 4.
What are the physical improvements observed after conducting analysis?
5.
How can we promote exercise to the elderly?
