CVEN 638 – Computer Integrated Construction Engineering Systems Fall 2023 ASSIGNMENT 2 – BIM to FM Evaluation Memo Background: Building Information Modeling (BIM) has changed the architectural, engineering & construction (AEC) industry. You have recently accepted a position with a well-known civil engineering and construction management firm, Jimbo Architecture/Engineering and Construction. (JAC). The firm is considered above average in acceptance and use of computers and information technology, but the organization has yet to adopt BIM as a business practice, or as a service it can offers to clients. JAC offers a host of services including pre-construction planning, design, project management, and lifecycle assessments. The CEO and various members of the executive management team has spent the past year positioning the firm to undertake a portfolio of courthouse projects (Similar to previous program Link ) though-out the U.S. by the General Services Administration (GSA). JAC has been very successful (i.e., profitable and GSA [the client] is very satisfied with results) with prior GSA work, and GSA is looking forward to working again with the firm. GSA is enthusiastically encouraging design and construction firms the use of BIM technologies to support facility management and building operations for upcoming courthouse projects. As the team-member with the most BIM knowledge, you have been asked to develop the BIM evaluation memo for the executive management team. Format: The style should be that of a formal business memo with a header and body, with adequate top, bottom, and side margins (≥ 1 inch) to allow instructor to make comments. The memo should be no more than 2 pages long. You may append--not to exceed 6 pages—the memo with figures, tables, etc. You should use some variation the following analysis framework that consists of: 1. define the issues/problems that the company faces in the short and long terms 2. use of and analysis of referenced sources 3. discuss the critical issues bearing on the choice of alternatives (pros and cons) 4. discuss the status of BIM being used for long-term facilities management 5. conclude with your recommendations Assumptions are required. Write-ups should represent only the work of a single student. You may discuss the case with other students, professors, etc., but the memo and the analysis must represent your own work.
