Logistics and supply chain management share common concepts with significant differences. The primary similarity is that both involve the movement of goods as well as information from suppliers to end consumers. However, logistics pertains to the transportation and storage of goods, while supply chain management covers the entire management of processes from sourcing to delivery. According to MSU (2023), some specific ways they vary are: Scope: Logistics focuses on transportation and storage, while supply chain management includes operations throughout the whole supply chain, such as sourcing, forecasting, and inventory management. Ownership: While logistics may be outsourced, supply chain management is an internal strategy. Objectives: Logistics aims for efficiency in transporting and storing goods. Supply chain management seeks to maximize overall costs and customer service. For instance, in a company, logistics is the use of the most effective delivery routes and warehousing space. However, supply chain management involves sourcing supplies, manufacturing, forecasting sales, and strategically overseeing these tasks. While logistics handles distribution, supply chain management organizes cross-functional procedures to ensure smooth operations. Logistics is the strategic transportation and storage of goods throughout the supply chain. Supply chain management provides a wider strategic approach to connecting supply chain operations and partners to produce value. Part II What are some of the ways that technological improvements are influencing logistics and supply chain management? How may businesses use these technologies to enhance efficiency and their service?
