HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration
You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea
to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples.
Identify the topic you chose to explore: •
Tulsa Race Massacre
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences. I first learned about the Tulsa race massacre when I was a child. Since we never learned about African-
American history in school, we learned about it in Church and during family meetings. The purpose of learning about African-American stories such as the Tulsa race massacre was to document history and learn proactive ways for financial stability. When learning about the Tulsa race massacre, I remember my grandfather bringing attention to the success of Black people being bankers, farmers, leaders, businessmen, and women.
Describe your beliefs, assumptions, and values related to your chosen topic. My favorite part about this story is how these Black people brought their beliefs and values together to build an entire community. In the early 1900s, Black people were not known as wealthy or successful, so I assume that this taught Black people that financial stability was possible. For Black people to come together and build a community, I would think they all had the same beliefs inwardly to build something together.
Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or modern society. Racism is still a crippling subject in our country today. There is an emphasis on equality and acceptance for all. Also, I believe there's a ton of education to cover on the Tulsa race massacre.
