Week 8 Discussion
Who held most political and military power in a feudal system? What factors were the foundations of
their power?
Although the Byzantine Empire was the fiercest and greatest centralized state in the Eastern Mediterranean during the eleventh century. Thus, the majority of the remainder of Christian Western Europe's kingdoms were divided. In West Francia, decentralization was more apparent, which developed
the decentralized form of government called feudalism (UMGC). Feudalism
could generally be described
as legitimate and military traditions or practices in Medieval Europe (New World). Particularly a method for organizing society around relationships and power obtained from controlling the plots of agricultural land, recognized as feudum
or fiefs
. With little administration, the power in the feudal system was led by
the arm soldiers who possessed the land. Hence, the armed men could secure a scheme of hereditary rule over their fiefs, comprised of political, social, judicial, and economic power (Lumen).
Nonetheless, insufficient governmental authority and constant warfare led to the system structure of their power (UMGC). This reason mainly concerns the continuous conflicts during the tenth and eleventh centuries. Kings completely controlled the kingdom's army, and the nobles had ultimate influence over their soldiers. Nonetheless, kings and powerful nobles lost control due to the kings weakening militaries and the noble's loss of influence over the warlords. Consequently, the warlords controlled the fiefs with armed men and armed castles, ruling and coercing people residing in neighboring land (UMGC). On the other hand, the provinces of West Francia were commanded by powerful nobles. Their rule was due to increased knights and castles and their expenses. Notably, with the growth in castles and knights, like the knight fee, the control of serfs led to them being constrained to their property and inferior and dependent on higher powers (New World). However, these influential "self-governing" nobles were in debt to fight due to their loyalty and duty towards the king.
