Tanya Martinez Ger 217 The question that I will be focusing on is “How is Toxi represented visually in Toxi? Does the film racialize her via mise-en-scène and cinematography choices (how Toxi is placed within the scene vis-à-vis the others, etc.)? Does the film develop a racialized gaze (of the camera, the characters)?” I will be answering this prompt in different ways. First, I will be using scenes from the film and analyze my interpretations on it. The second part is using outside sources that explain how the film was racialized. The first outside source that I will be using is “Race Under Reconstruction in German Cinema”, written by Angelica Fenner. The second source is “Representing the Afro-German in early West German cinema” written by Angelica Fenner. This journal article is more about the history behind the Toxi film. Lastly, I will be pulling chapter 4 “Reconstruction in Black and White: The Toxi Film” from a book “Race after Hitler” written by Heide Fehrenbach. All of these sources will be useful and necessary for my video presentation. Fehrenbach, Heide. "CHAPTER FOUR. Reconstruction in Black and White: The Toxi Films".
