Report
This journal assignment is worth 10 points. To get the best grade possible, review the scoring rubric below and follow the instructions in the assignment closely. You will first create a map illustrating the Missouri Compromise, and then you will use your map to describe the effects of the Missouri Compromise and predict its impact on the South. ● A title ● A legend differentiating between free states, slave states, territories closed to slavery by the Missouri Compromise, and territories opened to slavery by the compromise ● Accurate labels for all territories and states ● The Missouri Compromise line
1. What impact would you predict the Missouri Compromise to have on white Southern identity? On black Southern identity? It could be argued that the Missouri Compromise technically hurt Southern identity since it prohibited slavery's extension into the unorganized territory of the North West, although it could have helped unite southern black identity due to the fact that blacks had hoped slavery would eventually end. 2. Was the Missouri Compromise likely to end the issue of slavery? It wasn’t meant to be the sole factor in the abolition of slavery, but it was a definite turning point; subsequently increasing the momentum of the movement while still catering to southern slave owners. 3. What geographic features of the West might have had an impact on the spread of slavery? Hint: Think about the climate of the West and how it compares to the climate of the East and South. If you need more information, consult an atlas or a reliable Internet resource. The rocky mountains made it hard for the spread of slavery to the west coast.
