Sea Level History - Introduction,
Learning Goals and Case Study Details

In Case Study 2, you will be looking at two different groups of marine animals, the trilobites and
the graptolites. Both of these groups are principally found in the Paleozoic.
You will learn about their biology, evolutionary history, modes of life, distribution in space, etc.
You will then use this knowledge to see what these groups can tell you with respect to
narrowing down the age of specific Paleozoic rocks. The distribution of these groups can also
provide information about Earth's past environment and ancient geography in the areas that
contain these fossils.
Learning Goals
By the end of this Case Study, you should be able to:
1. Describe the basic biology of trilobites;
2. Describe the trilobite exoskeleton and how growth was achieved;

3. Compare and contrast the different trilobite eye systems;
4. Discuss some of the unusual eye adaptations found in the trilobites;
5. Describe the main morphological trends present in the trilobites through time;
6. Compare and contrast the trilobites and the agnostids;
7. Describe the basic biology of dendroids and graptoloids;
8. Describe the main morphological trends present in the graptolites through time;
9. Explain how trilobites and graptolites complement one another as relative dating tools.
From Lab 4
1. Use morphological characteristics to identify graptolite and trilobite fossils;
2. Use fossil age and position to determine the ages of different rocks in sections;
3. Use rock types to characterize the depositional environment of an area through time.

Trilobites (morphology, growth and feeding, trace fossils, morphological trends,
classification)
Graptolites (morphology, growth and feeding, morphological trends, classification)
Trilobites and graptolites as relative dating tools.
Application of concepts from sections 1 - 3 in a specific lab scenario (Lab 4).
