HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration
You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples.
Identify the topic you chose to explore: The America of the 1960s carried much political polarization and strife. One of the most significant uprisings occurred in the New York City neighborhood of Greenwich Village, just outside The Stonewall Inn. The bar was famous amongst the community as a safe space for queer and transgender people drag queens and homeless LGBTQ youth. Late into the evening of

, the police conducted a raid with the use of a warrant. Police entered the bar, assaulted customers, and arrested those violating state gender statutes. “Female officers would take suspected cross-dressing patrons into the bathroom to check the sex.” (Editors, History.com, 2017) Exhausted by this ongoing prejudicial harassment, the patrons and employees stayed at the bar, becoming increasingly agitated and leading to what is now known as the Stonewall Riots or Uprising. As patrons were forcefully dragged by the police onto Christopher Street, a riot broke out between individuals from the bar, neighborhood residents, and the police force. Six days of protests followed, led by many trans and queer people of color. While Stonewall didn’t start the gay rights movement, we can look back and see the environment it helped create and how it led to the foundation of many modern-day LGBTQ organizations.
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences.
This is my first introduction to the Stonewall Riots, but it draws my interest because of my connection to the LGBTQ community. I have many people in my life who are members of this community that I support, love and care for. My little brother is one of those people, and I have been here to witness some of his experiences of the treatment he has gotten, the prejudice, discrimination, judgment, and backlash. So, this topic holds a special place in my heart. Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose.
It is important to recognize that members of the LGBTQ community are individuals who deserve the same level of respect and decency as anyone else in society. Discrimination and judgment against this group of people is not only unnecessary but can also have long-lasting effects that may take years to undo. It is crucial that we strive to create a society that is accepting and inclusive of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
I believe that it's crucial to approach this topic with an open mind, and it appears that I have done just that as I have not formed any assumptions. Keeping an open mind allows for a more comprehensive analysis and understanding of the topic, which is essential in making informed decisions.
It is crucial for me to follow certain values that promote inclusivity, kindness, and unconditional love towards everyone, irrespective of their choices or identity. As an AI-powered assistant, I strive to create a safe and respectful environment where people can be themselves and express their true potential. Supporting and uplifting those around me is an integral part of my values, and I strongly believe in the power of enabling people to shine their light.

Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society.
Currently, in the world of politics, members of Congress are putting forward bills to band gender-affirming care for transgender youths as well as restricting the rights of gay men and women, including allowing business owners to refuse service to members of the LGBTQ community under the guise of religious freedom. (HRC, 2023) This topic is important now as LGBTQ members and the community are becoming more widely accepted, and it's important that society understands and welcomes them as equals, even if they disagree with their lifestyle.
