HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Climate Change and Environmental Issues
o
Chernobyl
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986, in Pripyat in the Soviet Union (now Ukraine).
Various factors, including reactor design flaws and human error, caused it. The explosion and
subsequent fires released large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere, leading to
one of the worst nuclear disasters in history. The disaster had significant environmental,
economic, and social impacts, both short-term and long-term, and it remains a vivid reminder of
the dangers of nuclear power.
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
As Chernobyl was one of the worst nuclear disasters in history, the key historical figures were the
brave firefighters, engineers, and workers who risked their lives to contain the disaster and
prevent it from spreading further. These individuals worked tirelessly to extinguish the fires,
construct a concrete sarcophagus around the damaged reactor, and clean up the contaminated
area. Many suffer from acute radiation sickness and other health problems due to their exposure
to high radiation levels. The international community has recognized and commemorated their
heroic efforts and sacrifices.
Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
The key historical figures in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, including firefighters, engineers, and
workers, were motivated by a strong sense of duty and responsibility to contain the disaster and
prevent it from causing further harm to people and the environment. They knew that their
actions could mean the difference between life and death for thousands of people, and they
were determined to do everything in their power to mitigate the effects of the disaster. Despite
the risks to their health and safety, these brave individuals worked tirelessly, often sacrificing
their well-being, to ensure that the catastrophe was controlled and that the affected area was
cleaned up as quickly and effectively as possible. Their motivation was driven by a deep sense of
public service and a commitment to protecting the safety and well-being of others, even in the
face of extreme danger and adversity.
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
The historical context played a significant role in causing the Chernobyl disaster. At the time, the
Soviet Union was undergoing a period of political and economic turmoil. The government was
focused on demonstrating its technological prowess to the world, but safety regulations should
have been in a rush to achieve this goal. Additionally, there was a culture of secrecy and fear of
reporting mistakes or accidents, which contributed to the lack of transparency and
communication leading up to the disaster. All of these factors combined to create an
2
environment where the safety of workers and the public was not given the attention it deserved,
ultimately leading to the catastrophic nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of
your topic.
Connecting the historical event of Chernobyl with the recent wildfires in Ukraine helps to
improve the understanding of climate change and environmental issues. The Chernobyl disaster
occurred in 1986, releasing large amounts of radioactive particles into the environment and
causing long-term ecological damage. The recent wildfires in Ukraine, sparked by a heatwave
and drought, have also caused significant environmental damage, including releasing harmful
particulate matter. By examining both events, we can see how climate change can cause severe
ecological disasters and the importance of taking action to mitigate its effects.
