A key issue was states' rights. Was the Civil War about slavery? Today, most professional historians agree with Stephens that slavery and the status of African Americans were at the heart of the crisis that plunged the U.S. into a civil war from 1861 to 1865. What was the most successful civil rights movement? The Montgomery Bus Boycot The young pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., was chosen as the first MIA leader. The boycot, more successful than anyone hoped, led to a 1956 Supreme Court decision banning segregated buses. Did the civil rights movement succeed?
