Introduction:
In the 1800’s a wave of Irish who were poor, starving, yet determined, fled their own country
in search of a better life in America. They were however faced with extreme social
discrimination due to their belief that their skills were not suitable. A major turning point and
an important historical event is when a large amount of Irish immigrants chose to enlist in the
American Civil War and how this decision essentially changed their lives and shaped their
future indefinitely. This significant event marked a turning point that affirmed their
assimilation by showing support for the Union, demonstrating their patriotism, and
essentially their heroism and bravery brought those waves of Irish immigrants firmly into the
fabric of the United States.

Thesis Statement:
With the influx of Irish coming to the United States of America in the 1800’s and facing
extreme discrimination, many of them enlisted in the Civil War which eventually helped pave
the way for the acceptance and success of their future in America.
