Module 6 Short Responses – Question 1
Which source will you analyze using active reading strategies? Include the name of the
article, the author, the publication, the date, and where you found it.
Read your chosen source using the active reading strategies you learned on the previous
page. Then, summarize the overall meaning and content of the reading. Write your
summary below. Your summary should be at least one paragraph long.
The article I chose was "Selma and Civil Rights" by Mark Rathbone, in the History Review
in 2008. I found this source in the SNHU Shapiro online library. It speaks about several
events that took place in Selma, Alabama, and the effect the town of Selma had on the civil
rights movement. Some of the events spoken about were Bloody Sunday, the Selma-
Montgomery March, and how in time African-Americans were being elected to office. The
author tries to show the reader that Selma, Alabama was an important and pivotal city during
the Civil Rights Movement because it helped open the countries eyes to the racism and
widespread inequality in America.
Module 6 Short Responses – Question 2
What events or historical forces contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid-
1970s? Name at least three, and briefly explain why you think each one was a
contributory cause of the Boston busing crisis.
One event that contributed to the school busing was the passage of the Civil Rights Act. The
passage of the Civil Rights Act led to the supreme court ordering school districts to speed up
the process of desegregation. Another contributory cause was the Racial Imbalance Act,
which was passed after a federal investigation of segregation in Boston public schools. The
new law disallowed segregation in Massachusetts public schools. The third was the fierce
opposition from the school committee to acknowledge the segregation. The committee
insisted that segregation was not present in the school system.
Module 6 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three specific consequences of the Boston
busing crisis.
One specific consequence of the Boston busing crisis was a steep decline in the student
population, almost 40%. Another consequence was abolishing the elected school committee
and replacing it with a panel appointed by the mayor. The third consequence was the Boston
public schools becoming fully desegregated in 1987.
Module 6 Short Responses – Question 4
Describe one cause of the event you have chosen for your historical analysis (keeping in
mind that there are many), and explain one piece of evidence from your research that
you will use to support this assertion. Describe one consequence of the event, and
explain one piece of evidence from your research that you will use to support this
assertion.
I have chosen the great depression as my event for historical analysis and one cause of the
depression was the stock market crash of 1929. There were many different factors at play but
the market crash had a devastating impact on the United States. I will use an article titled
"The Reasons Stocks Crashed in 1929" written by Harold Bierman Jr. in the Journal of
Investing, London.
One consequence of the Great Depression was the highest unemployment rates America has
ever experienced, reaching twenty-five percent. This came about because of lower wages
being paid to employees, who in turn didn't have as much money to spend, which sent
businesses into bankruptcy. I found information about this in a book titled "The Great
Depression: America, 1929-1941" written by Robert S. McElvaine.
