(1954):
The Hernández case is significant for being the first civil right case heard by
the US Supreme Court involving a Mexican American.
The case focused on the exclusion of Mexican
Americans from jury service.
Pete Hernández, the defendant, was tried and convicted of murder by
all-white jury.
His attorneys appealed to the Supreme Court and prevailed.
The court noted that the

Amendment, specifically the equal protection clause, prohibited discrimination against Mexican
Americans in jury selection.

Bastrop ISD
(1948): A lawsuit that successfully challenged the segregation of Mexican
American students.
A federal court ruled that the segregation of Mexican American students was
unconstitutional.
