Directions
To complete this worksheet, replace the text in brackets with the relevant content. If the response
requires a graph, take a screenshot of the information you want and paste the image into this document.
Part A: Perform a Murder-by-State Comparison
For this task, you will compare crime rates in individual states as shown in the example below. Follow the
directions in the Module One Assignment Worksheet Guide for doing a state-by-state comparison in
Sage Data. Enter four states. The example graph compares Arizona, California, Florida, and Georgia and
uses the default selection for years (all).
Follow these steps:
1.
Criteria:
List the criteria you used to perform your search.
The criteria that I used juveniles and families and the offense is murder in the states of Texas,
New Mexico, Colorado, and Oklahoma between the years of 1980 and 2020.
2.
Graph:
Generate a graph using your own data comparing murders by state.
3.
Data Observation:
What do you observe about the murder rate for each state over time?
a.
Is crime increasing or decreasing?
I observe that the murder rates in each state have been decreasing over time since the
1980s.
b.
Are there any unusual spikes or drops?
Yes, Texas has a huge spike between the years of 1985-1995, Colorado had a spike in the
year of 2005, and a major drop by 2019. New Mexico had a major drop between the
years of 1990-1995. Oklahoma had a spike between 1980-1985 and another one in 2009
and the major drop would be in 2000.
c.
What was happening in current events during the period of greatest increase and
decrease that may have had an impact on the trend?
The current events that were happening during the period of greatest increase in Texas
and Oklahoma was the Gulf War and Iran-Iraq war, and Colorado spike would be events
of the BTK serial killer, and Olympic Park bomber. Oklahoma in 2009 events would be
Hudson River plane crash, and Iran-Iraq war. The decreases in New Mexico, Oklahoma,
and Colorado would be the Wars.
d.
What else do you notice about the data?
That these four states both had increases and decreases between the years 1980-2020
and Texas has the biggest increase in crime and Colorado had the lowest crime rate.
4.
Propose Research:
What might be the next steps you take to examine these four states?
a.
What’s missing that might help you make a comparison between the states?
Having more information on the spikes in murder among the four states, events that
were going on during those spikes.
b.
What questions are you asking yourself that might help you plan your next steps?
The question I would ask myself that would help my next steps would be did the war on
drugs cause these spikes or drops in crime within the four states.
Part B: Choose Your Own Topic and Produce a Comparison
1.
In the previous section, you browsed by location. In this exercise, you will browse by selecting a
topic.
a.
Type your own crime filter into the
Dataset
panel. Use more than one filter if you like.
b.
Once you have selected the data sets you want, use the
Indicator
panel on the top to
further refine your research.
2.
You will see a list of offenses or crime types. Choose a subtopic from the column. Refine further
using other filters provided (such as years or states).
3.
Generate a graph.
4.
From your map, select two to four states to compare. To compare states, select the
Compare
tab.
Texas and New Mexico

had a spike in between the years of 2005-2010. New Mexico had a drop in between the
years of 1980-1985. Colorado had a drop between the years 1995-2000 and Oklahoma
had a drop in 1985-1990.
c.
What was happening in current events during the period of greatest increase and
decrease that may have had an impact on the trend?
The events happening in 2015 would be racial unrest over police killings, in the years of
1980-1985 would be the wars and in 1990-2000 wars and serial killings.
d.

New Mexico has a high crime rate then Oklahoma and Colorado do. Colorado had the
greatest decrease in crime and Oklahoma is between New Mexico and Colorado in crime
rate.
11.
Propose Research:
What next steps might you take to examine these four states?
a.
What’s missing that might help you make a comparison between the states?
The type of crimes and the events that occurred during the high spikes and decreases.
b.
What questions are you asking yourself that might help you plan your next steps?
Why does New Mexico have a high crime rate in robbery then Oklahoma and Colorado
do.
Part C: Investigate Crime Rates by Location

Begin by selecting
Browse by Subject
.
2.
Select
Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement
. This will bring you to the Datasets page. Now
select
Arrests

pane. Select
Counties Within State
.
4.
Choose any state and then any county within that state.
New Mexico, Eddy County
5.
Generate a graph
6.
Select up to three offenses. (Be sure to
deselect
All Offenses
.) Try to think of three offenses that
might be related. For example, forgery, fraud, and embezzlement go together.

Create Graph:
Using your own data comparing results, use the
Trend Chart
that best displays the
information you’ve selected.

What else do you notice about the data?
I notice that Fraud is the highest crime in the United States and Forgery is the second
highest and the least would be embezzlement.
9.
Propose Research:

a.
What’s missing that might help you make a comparison between the offenses?
I would have to say that the use of new technology and cyber attacks on financial or
personal people would have made a big difference.
b.
What questions are you asking yourself that might help you plan your next steps?
Which offenses are based off of cyber attacks and which ones are more based on a
person to person attack of fraud, forgery and embezzlement.
Part D: Apply Your Knowledge and Skills in Making a Comparison of Data
1.
Go to
City and Town Population Totals: 2010–2019
.
2.
Under the heading
Places of 50,000 or More
, find and download this Excel file:
Annual Estimates of the Resident Population for Incorporated Places of 50,000 or
More, Ranked by July 1, 2019 Population: April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2019
3.
In 2018, what was the population estimate for Houston, Texas?
The population in Houston, Texas was 2,318,573 in 2018.
4.
In 2018, what was the population estimate for Chicago, Illinois?
The population in Chicago, Illinois was 2,701,423 in 2018
5.
Are the population estimates in 2018 for both Houston and Chicago about the same?
Yes, the population for both Houston, Texas and Chicago, Illinois are about the same in 2018.
6.
Before you look at crime statistics, what do you hypothesize? Do you believe that Houston had
more crime in 2018 than Chicago did? Or did Chicago have more crime than Houston did in
2018? Explain your rationale.
I predict that Houston, Texas had more crime than Chicago, Illinois does in 2018. Even though
they are both big cities I think Houston, Texas has more crime due to more people moving into
the state and Chicago, Illinois has less crime due to people moving out of the state because of
crime that is happening.
7.
Go to
Sage Data
.
a.
You will be comparing the crime rates for Harris County (where Houston is) and Cook
County (where Chicago is).
Hint:
Under
Chart Types
, change the rank
to
Offense
. This will help you with
your data visualization.
b.
Create a graph.
c.
What are the crime rates for 2018 for both Harris County and Cook County?
The crime rates for Harris County was 96,174 whereas Cook county had only 78,323 in
crime rates.
d.
Now that you’ve found the crime rates in 2018, was your hypothesis correct or
incorrect?
Yes, my hypothesis was correct for crime rates.
e.
What can you conclude about the crime rates for both cities in 2018? Does one city
combat or deter crime better or have better resources than the other? What can the city
with the higher crime rate (between Houston and Chicago) do to prevent or deter
crime?
I can conclude that crime rates for both cities in 2018 are almost the same even though
there is a big difference in population size. I would have to say I am unsure if one city
combats crime more than the other city. I think that Houston, Texas can use more police
on patrol to help combat crime and the use of strategies that help to deter crime from
high crime areas.
