HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Tulsa Massacre
Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of
your current event.
How difficult was it for the Greenwoods families to recover from all that was lost and prosper financially?
I asked myself many questions, from racism to the economy. This time I was more interested in
economics because I wanted to know how such an influential and prosperous city could recover
from such a strong blow. I started researching on the Internet and in the university bookstore to
see if they have been able to upload it to date and the responses were overwhelming. In almost
any case, everything has been difficult since that macabre night that ended the prosperity of
that town because many had to leave there because they had nothing left after the massacre in
Tulsa. It was a town rich in oil and that allowed both whites and blacks to have part of that
advantage of oil cultivation. Thanks to this, there was a prosperous city of colored people in the
USA with several very successful black businessmen. This was a key for the whites to begin to
feel jealous of them and their prosperity. In this state, segregation did not exist at that time.
This bothered whites too much and since there was no segregation, both blacks and whites
could use the same buildings that was where the problem broke out when a young black man
shared the same elevator with a white woman, and he was falsely accused of abusing her. This
caused the tension that already existed between whites and blacks to explode, resulting in the
problem that we already know about in history, the great Tulsa Massacre. This is something that
does not end there since today there is still that kind of confrontation between both races. I
believe that our community, even after so many years, is not prepared to live in harmony with
each other without ever having this type of friction between these races.
Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events.
Biased perspectives could influence on a large scale the sources where we seek information, whether
they are false or real, even if any topic is investigated. In the Tulsa massacre, the primary sources that
have been found are exclusively stories from survivors of the attack that night who have their own
stories, but they all agree with the same thing and that is the hatred that encompassed the balconies at
that time and the destruction of their people. without any provocation. This information can in a
moment lead the person investigating to see only one perspective and that's it. In this case, there was
also no in-person act by the city government leaving the historic event without those responsible for
such acts committed on that night of May 31, 1921. For the white race and its followers, these
statements leave them in a bad light in front of them They do not favor them in any way. There are quite
a few (whys) in this story that leave the reader with a lack of information to understand what was going
on in the heads of both races at that moment. Thus, it is not understandable to find the complete picture
of what really happened during and after this historical event. What this does to the reader is that simply
reading the story makes them apathetic and concerned about only one side of the story without having
heard the full events.
Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing
perspective.
I am sure that if some witness from the white race existed and told what really caused everything. I
believe that if this narrative were included then we would have two sides of the coin and we would
better understand the action that the white community took that night and why that attack occurred.
There is very little or almost no information from white people about why they took this action, maybe
there is, but I have not been able to find much about why this historic event ended with the death and
destruction of a community of black people in Greenwood. I think putting aside the narration of the
events by black people. I think that if we could listen to the missing part, we could see better what really
happened, compare them both, and then reach a stronger and more analyzed conclusion. Let's
remember that we only see one perspective or part of the facts and that is where we lean.
Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing
perspective.
From my point of view, I don't think it would change the narrative much for this historical event.
This is because we have testimonies from survivors of that night and we have information about
what was written by the alleged shooter that day, such as the attacks in videos. Another part we
have are the secondary sources articles about that night's journalists expressing their opinion,
which in my opinion show little or no bias about the event, to finish and this is my opinion this
event is only related to racial reasons and of better quality of life which the whites did not
accept.
