HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Tulsa Massacre 1921 Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event. It occurred through a tension of racism and prosperity around the 1920s in the US. Greenwood or 'Black Wall Street' as they used to call it was quite prosperous at that time to the point that many people of color emigrated there. Between May 31 and June 1, the whites, with false accusations and other allegations, attacked them, destroying the entire city and the prosperity it brought. This resulted in deaths on both sides, around 300 dead, and several injuries. (Clark 2021) Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event. One of the most important figures in this event was Dick Rowland, who was falsely accused of having abused a white woman named Sarah Page, in an elevator the day before the massacre. (Clark 2021) these accusations were the perfect excuse for a mob of whites to enter Greenwood to loot, destroy, and burn the entire city. This was more due to the desire to maintain racial dominance and suppress the economic successes of blacks, resulting in tragedy. Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event. As the story goes, this was a prosperous city where the economy did very well. The key to this massacre was the economic zeal and racial prejudice that existed at that time. Most whites were resentful or furious at the prosperity that Greenwood had and more than that those who resided there were people of color and what better excuse than that of a man of color having falsely abused a white woman to take "justice" into his hands and put an end to this economic prosperity and success that Afro-Americans had. Americans at that time. Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event. The segregation of races, the economy and the false judicial system that favored racism in the 20th century were an important part of this historical context and influenced what is known today as The Tulsa Massacre of 1921. Greenwoods was a part where the economy was prosperous and continued to advance over time, something that was not seen favorably by the whites at that time. The false accusation against the young Dick Rowland and the tabloid press made this escalate further, resulting in what we now know as one of the largest massacres in US history. Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic. If we connect the events of the Tulsa Massacre with what is experienced today not only in the US but in other parts of the world, we can understand why these reasons are harmful and unfair to people of color and other races in the USA and the world. Historical events have consequences throughout history. It is important to remember what happened back then especially as we continue to struggle with issues of systemic racism, economic disparities, and
racial violence today (Brown 2021). It is important to know this so that in the future we can rectify historical prejudices and be able to have the same equality in the future. References: Clark, A.
