Community Policing: Principles
Several principles govern community policing. The primary function of community
policing is to prevent criminal activities and to maintain order. The public must approve the
actions of the police officers for the success of the community policing program. Therefore, the
police must win the public's trust in law and order in the community. This is realized when the
police officers relentlessly show absolute neutrality to the law. When there is cooperation
between the police and the public, there is no need to use force (Cordner, 2017). However, police
may be forced to use power in preventing crimes and maintaining order in cases where advice
and persuasion are not appropriate.
Community Policing: Valuable Approach
The philosophy of community policing is a valuable approach in society today than ever
before. Community policing enables the police to create a better relationship with the people and
other stakeholders hence helping them to maintain law and order (Cordner, 2017). A good
relationship between the police officers and the public enables them to get relevant information
regarding crimes and issues that need to be solved.
Community Policing: Homelessness in LA
There are a lot of unhoused persons in Los Angeles (LA). In 2020, approximately 66,000
individuals in LA were homeless (Demsas, 2021). The Los Angeles Police Department uses
community policing by ensuring they develop collaboration amongst the police and the public
during its operations. However, putting interventions into place can help to minimize the issue of
homelessness in Los Angeles. The police should work towards being friendly to the homeless
3
people unless they fail to cooperate. They need to create trust among the homeless people
because they are also Americans and discuss issues regarding crimes and mental issues to
develop a solution. The police department can help link the homeless people to the necessary
departments where they can get assistance. Police should work with the community to ensure
that homeless people are treated well and not discriminated against by others. However, the
police may use force where homeless people encroach on private facilities and cause problems to
the owner.
Professional Practice of Policing: Tactics
The Los Angeles police officers have recently been using force when dealing with
homeless people. There has been a recent increase in the number of homeless people in the
region, which goes hand in hand with increased criminal activities involving them. Since most
homeless people spend their lives in public, they tend to interact more with police officers than
other people. On numerous occasions, the homeless made reports about police using force when
dealing with them, causing injuries and sometimes shootings leading to death (Miller, 2020).
Professional Practice of Policing: Strategy
The LA police use community policing. Police cooperate with the residents and other
stakeholders to help solve the issues of homelessness in Los Angeles. When homeless people
have mental problems to be addressed, police link them to mental health specialists. Community
policing is an effective strategy that both police and citizens embraced globally.
