HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Tulsa Massacre
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
The Tulsa Massacre occurred on May 31 and June 1, 1921, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It occurred at the
end of WW1. During this time, racial hostility towards blacks was still prevalent throughout the
US. “ Oklahoma had segregation laws that were among
The context surrounding this event
concerns economic empowerment and racial animus. In 1919 alone, there were at least two
dozen race riots in Chicago, Washington, Atlanta, and Minnesota. (Ronzoni, 2021)
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
A key historical group participating in the Tulsa massacre was the white residents of Tulsa,
Oklahoma. The white residents were seen as superior citizens. They were the aggressors in the
massacre. During the massacre, they burned down several homes and black-owned businesses
in Greenwood.
Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
According to (2021),
“to truly understand the Tulsa Massacre, we also need to understand the
kind of mass psychosis that gripped many white males after the Civil War, engendered by fear
and guilt about interracial sex; a mass psychosis that still has reverberations today. Whose
actions precipitated the obliteration of America's most thriving Black community." A publisher,
Richard
Lloyd Jones, used racism to sell papers. He wrote various racial headlines in the papers.
Within hours of the papers going out, thousands of armed white men surrounded the Tulsa
courthouse where Rowland was being held. (Ronzoni, 2021)
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
The Segregation of whites and blacks validated the discrimination of blacks in America. The
white residents benefited from the segregation because it allowed them to commit violence
towards blacks and remain superior, all while not facing legal punishment. This was normal in
society in the mid-1900s.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of
your topic.
I think that connecting the Tulsa massacre to my current event of the Black Lives Matter
movement helps me understand the topic because it shows me that racism is still current to this
day.
It shows me that no matter the year or place, blacks are still a current target for racism.
Times have changed, but in the current year of 2023, racial inequality is still the same.
