HIS 100 Module Three Activity: Historical Context - Thelma Robinson
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
•
Stonewall Riots
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
•
The Stonewall Riots were a series of unrest and demonstrations that started on June 28, 1969, in
response to a police raid on a gay club in New York. Workers and customers of the bar who were
thought to be members of the LGBTQ community were removed by the police. Gay bars were
thought to be a secure location for LGBTQ people. During this historical period, same-sex
marriage was prohibited, and community members were not acknowledged or accepted in
society.
Describe
a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
•
During the Stonewall riots in New York, Marsha P. Johnson played a significant leadership role.
In addition to working in sex, Marsha was involved in the drag culture. She was said to be kind
and willing to assist anyone in need. On the first night of the rioting, Marsha was at the
Stonewall Inn. Numerous eyewitnesses claimed she was leading the throng and one of the first
to instigate the rioting. Following the Stonewall riots, she continued to be involved in numerous
more well-known LGBTQ community movements.
Explain the key historical figure
or group’s
motivation to participate in your historical event.
•
Being a member of the LGBTQ community and desiring equal rights to live her life as she pleased
was Marsha P. Johnson's only reason for taking part in the Stonewall riots. She aspired to
happiness just like everyone else. It is reasonable to suppose that she faced her fair share of
difficulties as a transgender African American living in the 1960s.
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
•
The homosexual community was not accepted in the 1960s, and there were numerous police
raids on gay bars during this period in history. Usually, the bars had a tip that the cops were on
their way. They eventually had enough and made the decision to stand out for their human
rights because same-sex marriage was illegal, and the community was viewed as outcasts. For
the LGBTQ community, this marked the turning point in their lengthy struggle.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of
your topic.
•
By making a connection between two similar issues, you can examine the past, present, and
possibly even future together to better the present. You might try to make improvements by
examining what went wrong. The 2020 PRIDE march is proof that the community is still actively
for equal rights. Even though the community has come a long way, more must be done for it.
Understanding and appreciating the struggles and hardships of those who came before us can
help us better understand where our country and the world have come from.
