Chapter 1: 1) Document: "Spain in the New World" Pg. 4 1. Based on the documents, what seems to be the primary purpose of the Spanish in the New World? Once Spain finally realized the wealth that could be extracted from the New World, they came to it to take over the land. The Spanish leader established policies and orders to control their new colonies. 2. How did the Spanish rulers view the native peoples? Explain. They wanted peace among them. They saw themselves as the guardian of their rights. They gave them benefits so then they could stay on the land and help them with things like war. 3. How have the attitudes of the Spanish rulers changed in the nine years between the 1 st and the 2 nd documents? How might the 2 nd document allow for the subjugation of the native people by unscrupulous Spanish officials in the New World? The attitudes in the 1 st article were very demanding and you will make these changes no matter what. In the 2 nd document, they were peaceful, and the Spanish rulers gave them more benefits and everything, In the second document, if you are more kind and thoughtful with everything towards them, then they are going to want to “pay you back” with any sort of kindness. 2) Vignette: "A Pirate Helps Make a World Power" Pg. 12 1. Why did Britain resort to privateering? How might other nations, like Spain, respond? Britain resorted to privateering so they could establish some naval power. When Spain heard about this news, they started loading ships in the Pacific rather than carrying them to land in the Caribbean Sea to be loaded. 2. Why might England be desirous of finding a Northwest Passage?
England might have desired to find a Northwest Passage because it would give them a “leg up” when they were trying to trade with Asia. 3. What were the multiple missions for Francis Drake? Which do you think was most important to Britain? Francis Drake had three missions but only accomplished two. It was leading a ship in a single voyage, leading an expedition against the Spanish colonies, and finding a Northwest Passage, which he didn’t complete. The most important one I think was when he was assigned to lead an expedition against the Spanish colonies. 3) Vignette: “The Pueblo Revolt” Pg 13 1. How did Spanish authorities seek to control the Pueblos they encountered in New Mexico? How did the Pueblo people respond to Spanish colonial authority? When the Spanish authorities were seeking to control the Pueblos, they were demanding things for them to do such as moving to different regions and forcing them to practice a different religion. Most of the Pueblo people resisted but that didn’t last long in the colony due to the lack of organization between the Pueblos. 2. Why did most Pueblo efforts at resistance fail? Why did Popay succeed? Most of the Pueblos’ efforts failed because they didn’t have organization between the Pueblo. Popay succeeded because he was able to catch the Spanish by surprise and unprepared. The Spanish were forced to withdraw from Santa Fe because they were outnumbered. 3. What might the experience of the pueblos suggest about Native Americans and colonization elsewhere in the Americas? They are able to express their past and talk about how not to worry about the future because it will only get better from there. They talked about towards the end of the document that even though the Spanish ruled them again, it wasn’t nearly as bad because they gained rights over time.
Chapter 2: 4) Doc: “A New Voyage to Carolina” Pg 18 1. What is Lawson’s overall evaluation of Native American culture? Did he see Indians as equals to Europeans? Lawson’s overall evaluation of the Native American culture was very friendly and made everyone feel accepted in the European colony. 2. According to Lawson, how did Native Americans view English colonists: as friends or as potential enemies? Did all Indians share the same view of the English? He thinks Native Americans viewed English colonists as friends. 3. What attitudes does Lawson express towards Indian religious beliefs? Why did Enoe-Will refuse to convert to Christianity? 5) Doc: “Darien Anti-Slavery Petition” Pg 20 1. Does this petition view slavery as economically beneficial, or does consider slavery to be harmful to the colonial economy? I would say this petition's view on slavery would be harmful to the colonial economy as it would be helping those to be out of slavery not to be in it. 2. According to the petition, why would introducing slavery into Georgia be dangerous to white inhabitants? It would be dangerous for multiple different reasons, which are listed in the document. They talk about their wives and children, their own sake, and posterity. 3. What conclusion does the petition reach regarding the morality of slavery? The conclusion of this petition reached the wrongness of slavery because they were trying to win against the pro-slavery people. They are listing reasons why there shouldn’t be slavery in Georgia.

6) Vignette: “Murder in Virginia” Pg 29 1. Why did some individuals like Hellier decide to become indentured servants in America? What did servants hope to get out of the arrangement? They decide to become indentured servants in America because they agree to work for free for a few years to repay the purchaser of their contract. 2. Once in Virginia, how much control did Hellier have over who was his master and what type of work he was required to do? He had no control whatsoever. His contract was immediately sold to a different master once he entered Virginia. His labor got switched to doing manual labor in tobacco fields. 3. What mistreatment did he suffer as a servant? Though he confessed and admitted that he deserved execution, who else did he blame for his murderous crimes? The mistreatment he suffered was he was cursed, screamed at, and insulted twenty-four hours a day, every day. Before he died, he wanted to share the blame with the whole system of indentured servitude. Chapter 3 7) Doc: “William Penn’s Letter to the Pennsylvania Indians” Pg 32 1. What ideas or principles did Penn want to use as a basis for Indian relations? How does Penn believe that his approach was different from those employed in other colonies? When Penn was writing this letter to them, he wanted to let them know that he wanted peace and be friends with them. He didn’t like the hatred and violence that was going on in the other colonies for them. 2. In the ways does Penn’s religious faith manifest itself in the letter? How did Penn’s religious beliefs influence the way he viewed and treated Indians?
He was talking about how God has created us for them to live soberly and kindly together in the world, not to devour and destroy one another’s lives. He wanted to make it known that he stood by his religious beliefs. 3. If Penn succeeded in forging a positive, mutually beneficial relationship with native peoples, how might that help the newly established colony as a whole to succeed? If Penn succeeded then everyone would want to make peace because it would make the world and/ or country better. I feel like it would help others realize that they can live together in peace and harmony rather than always fighting each other 24/7. 8) Vignette: “The Captivity of Mary Rowlandson” Pg 40 1. How did Rowlandson’s religious faith affect her outlook and her behavior during her captivity? While she was held captive, she was tested a bunch for her faith. She believed that the captors were the devil and that she just needed to trust God that eventually, she would get out of the captivity. As time passed, the time there were easier times for her as she was able to leave the faculty with her children not that long after. 2. Did Rowlandson’s Indian captors treat her with cruelty, with kindness, or with a mixture of both? When readers in the 1680s finished reading her book, do you think the narrative caused readers to be more favorable or more unfavorable in their view of Indians? I feel like reading this document, the captors were treating her with kindness because they let her daughter who passed get a grave and let her view it. I feel like if they were cruel, they would’ve not let her do that. I also feel like the narrative caused the reader to be more favorable in their view of the Indians because as time went on after her daughter’s death, life became easier for her. 3. Would you call Mary Rowlandson’s story a tragedy, or a tale of triumph? Why?
I would call her story a tale of triumph because she was able to get out of the faculty with her children in one piece. Even though there were tragedies that happened after she was released, she still was able to live a good life after that.
