HIS 100 Module Four Activity Template: Historical Narratives Locate an additional secondary source relevant to your historical event. Use all four of your sources (two primary and two secondary) to answer the questions below. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: I chose to explore the topic of Chernobyl. Attempt to write the APA style citations for your four sources. Include links to each source. You will not be penalized for incorrect citation format. Untitled notice on levels of radiation in Chernobyl NPP and steps taken in response | Wilson Center Digital Archive. (n.d.). In all of these sources the main theme is that many crucial flaws during the construction process were made as well as numerous safety protocols were overlooked as the nuclear reactor was staffed with inadequate employees. Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event. I read an article that posed the idea that this could have been related to US involvement because they were in the midst of the Cold War and blowing up one of the USSR’s nuclear reactors would definitely benefit the US. The notion that the Chernobyl incident could have been a result of foul play never crossed my mind but it certainly does make sense given the political climate between the US and the Soviet Union.
Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. Please provide your revised research question and then explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical event. From all the evidence in the sources I have gathered it is very clear that many safety protocols and infrastructure issues were overlooked. During this time the USSR was in the midst of the Cold War and transitioning to nuclear energy rather than oil and gas would be very beneficial to the Soviet Union. With how vital and how dependent the USSR was on nuclear energy why were so many safety protocols and construction problems overlooked.
