HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: I chose to explore the topic of Chernobyl Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event. While exploring my research question I came to one conclusion, oversight and regulation has been one of the worst issues in society for a long time. No matter the situation, safety is not as important as getting the job done in the case of Chernobyl, or whether it be big banks making risky investments to boost their bottom line and disregarding future implications. Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events. Reading some of the perspectives I have read on the Chernobyl incident, a majority of the sources put the blame on poor structural integrity and inadequate staffing of the nuclear reactors. Most people don’t consider the fact that this all happened amidst the Cold War, that fact in itself raises some risky implications about the development and use of the reactor. As far as Silicon Valley Bank, the executives made an announcement that some financial restructuring was going to happen. This statement seems harmless but once I took a closer look at what really happened it became very clear. SVB made some risky investments in government bonds and when the Federal Reserve had to hike rates to combat the rising inflation these higher rates essentially eroded SVB’s entire bond portfolio. Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. The narrative would be completely changed if told from an absent voice. This new perspective would give more insight on what really happened leading up to the incident and maybe even on conditions surrounding the environment and that information might help in revealing the true nature of the incident. Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. The narrative surrounding my current event would not be changed because we have seen this exact scenario on a larger scale during the crash of 2007. Leading up to the market crash in 2007 a lot of banks were making these same investments because in the short term these investments were viable, but in the long run these investments ended up losing the banks billions of dollars in total exposure.
