1. Identify and explain the three broad causes of US Imperialism in the late 1800s, according to Hewitt and Lawson. According to Hewitt and Lawson three main factors that encouraged US imperialism were 1 being the need for greater global power, 2 being new ways and form of making profits, and 3 being strengthening the power of the U.S military. In the book Exploring American Histories 4 th edition states that “Once the war was over, and with its newly acquired empire in place, the United States sought to achieve even greater global power. President Theodore Roosevelt and his successors achieved Captain Mahan’s dream of building a Central American canal and wielded U.S. military and financial might in the Caribbean with little restraint.” (page682: : Hewitt, Lawson) this quote shows that the U.S wanted power, economic, and a stronger military which can be three reasons for the push of the broad cause of the U.S. Imperialism in the late 18 th century. 2. See the cartoon in Chapter 20 titled "A Bigger Job Than He Thought For" by William Carson. A file of the cartoon is provided in this module. According to this cartoon, why did Americans turn against the Philippines War? The Americans turned against the Philippines for multiple various reasons one of these key reasons being the fact that the Filipinos were struggling to get their independence, the Philippines were portrayed as weak by not just the American’s but many other countries also the Americans believed they were assigned the role to “civilize” the Filipinos. The war also was a bad decision as it took very long and cost a lot of money at the time, The Americans also decided to go to war with the Filipinos as they didn’t want to just lend them back to Spain as people would think of that as bad business. 3. According to the PowerPoint titled World War I, why did the United States enter the first world war? I believe that the United States decided to join World War 1 because President Woodrow Wilson wanted to punish Germany. In the book Exploring American Histories 4 th edition is states that “The German decision to gamble on all out victory or complete ruin… alone compelled Wilson to break diplomatic relations, to adopt policy of armed neutrality, and finally to ask for a declaration of war” (page688: Hewitt, Lawson) which shows that President Woodrow Wilson wanted punish Germany for their bold decision to go all out.
