Introduction to Education Warm Up: Historical Perspectives on Public Education There are quite a few events in the history of public education that have shaped current practices. While it is not possible to cover each of these events in this course, this is an opportunity for you to determine the five events that you believe have had the greatest influence on how schools function today . Peruse (my SAT word-of-the-day) the American Educational History: A Hypertext Timeline . Click on links of those events related to education and the schools that you believe are interesting and/or important. Clicking on the link provides additional information about the specifics of the event. You are to choose the five events included on the timeline that you believe are the most important in the history of American education . Three of the events that you choose must be before the year you were born. "Important" is defined as those events that have had the greatest impact on American society . For each of the five events that you have chosen explain why you believe the event is important in the history of American education. Complete sentences are required. Event 1 (1752 - St. Matthew Lutheran School): St. Matthew Lutheran School, founded in New York City in 1752 by Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, is a significant event in the history of American education. It represents one of the earliest examples of religious and parochial schooling in North America. Lutheran "parish schools" like St. Matthew played a crucial role in providing education, often with a strong religious and moral focus, to early American communities. This event highlights the influence of religious organizations in shaping the educational landscape and the early emphasis on values and character development in American education. Event 2 (1763 - The French and Indian War Ends): The end of the French and Indian War in 1763 is a pivotal event in American history with far-reaching implications for education. The Treaty of Paris that concluded the war resulted in England gaining control of most French territory in North America. This event indirectly influenced American education by setting the stage for future tensions and conflicts that would eventually lead to the American Revolution. The struggle for independence and the subsequent formation of the United States played a significant role
in shaping the principles and priorities of American education, leading to a greater focus on civic education and democratic values. Event 3 (1785 - The Land Ordinance of 1785): The Land Ordinance of 1785 is an important event in the history of American education because it established the principle of reserving land for the support of education in the western territories. This ordinance stipulated that one section of land in every township should be set aside for the maintenance of public schools. It was a forward-thinking policy that reflected the value placed on education and its role in the development of new territories. This event contributed to the growth of public education in the United States and marked the beginning of a system that would fund schools through the sale of public lands. Event 4 (1787 - The Northwest Ordinance): The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 is a crucial event in the history of American education as it explicitly recognized the importance of education in the newly expanding territories. It stated, "Religion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged." This ordinance not only emphasized the importance of education for moral and civic reasons but also set aside land for educational purposes. It laid the foundation for public education in the Northwest Territory and provided a model for education policies in future states. Event 5 (1789 - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill): The chartering of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1789 is a significant event in American education history. It marked the establishment of the first public university in the United States to award degrees in the 18th century. This event highlights the early efforts to provide accessible higher education in the United States and set a precedent for the development of state-funded universities. The creation of public universities like UNC-Chapel Hill played a crucial role in expanding educational opportunities and promoting higher education in the United States.
