Bianca Madrigal 1. Describe one of these outlaw heroes, Juan Cortina, Joaquin Murrieta, Gregorio Cortez, Pancho Villa, or Emiliano Zapata. Explain the importance of his actions to the Mexican or Mexican American community in which they lived. Why do you think outlaw heroes are significant in all cultures, and particularly Mexican culture? Pancho Villa was a general guerrilla fighter who fought in the Mexican Revolution his real name is Francisco Villa. He was the first leader to defeat regular government soldiers his men won continual battles. He forced the president Porfirio Diaz out of Mexico. Pacho Villa was supported by the US. Washington first supported him, but he was later defeated and lost most his support. Pancho was very angered with the US but switching on him and became rivals. He had tried to plot drawing the US into Mexico by attacking the border village of Columbus New Mexico by killing US citizens. I feel Mexican outlaws especially significant in Mexican culture is because it took someone who does not care how they need to make thing right or what they stand for known in their own way and with some it was shown in violence which made them outlaws even if for a good reason or outcome thy did it in bad ways. 2. Mexican American Civil rights groups such as, LULAC, SVREP, MALDEF, UFW, and the American GI Forum formed between the 1920’s-1970’s. First, explain the individual goals of each one of these groups, then explain how these groups together represent the progress of Mexican American civil rights in the US. LULAC stand for The League of United Latin American Citizens found in 1929 this is the oldest and most respected Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States of America. The LULAC fought for full access to the political process and work to improve the opportunities for Hispanic Americans. SVREP stands for Southwest Voter Registration Education Project that was founded in 1974 this is the oldest and largest nonpartisan Latino voter participation that was organized in the US. Their goal is to empower as many Latinos as possible to register to vote, so that their opinion mattered and impacts. This helped the progress of Mexican American civil rights in the US by making sure that Mexican American had an opinion and taken seriously. MALDEF stands for Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Funds. This organization is a non-profit civil right founded in 1968 by Jack Greenburg. Their goal was to protect and defend the rights of all Latinos living in the US and the constitutional rights of Americans. This group together represent the Mexican American civil rights in the US with protecting their rights like all other American so that there is no discrimination. UFW stands for Unted Farm Workers this group was union for farm workers founded in 1962 by Ceasar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. The goal is to reform farm workers covering issues like worker protections, pesticides, and immigration reforms. They represent the Mexican American civil rights in the US by making sure the Farm workers are being well a taken care equally as Americans. American GI Forum is a congressional chartered Hispanic veterans and civil rights founded in 1948. Their goal is to help with Veteran issues, education, public housing, poll taxation, voter registration and hospitalization and employment civil rights. This group together helped represent the Mexican American civil rights in the US by protecting and advocating for veterans in Americans.
