Jonathan Campodonico Prof.R.Desembrana Composition I October 24th, 2023 In the reading “ Well-Behaved women seldom make history” by historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich she talks about how she has gained fame for a line from a 1976 article: "Well-behaved women seldom make history." The quote was later used in a 1995 article by journalist Kay Mills as an epigraph for her informal history of American women. The author, Jill Portugal, found the "rarely" version of the quote in her roommate's copy of The New Beacon Book of Quotations by Women and asked permission to print it on T-shirts. The shirt became a best-selling item, and Portugal's company, "one angry girl designs," fights against sexual harassment, rape, pornography, and fascist beauty standards. The quote has been featured in CosmoGirl, the Christian Science Monitor, and Creative Keepsake Scrapbooking Magazine, just a bunch of major known sources/ outlets. The author's accidental fame has given a new perspective on American popular culture, as some women contemplate the demise of feminism, while others have only recently discovered it. She also goes on about how The "well-behaved women '' quote perpetuates stereotypes about women's invisibility and decorum in history. Most believe that women are less visible than men due to their roles in nurturing domestic roles. However, this argument limits history, as historians like herself focus on broad transformations in human behavior, such as falling death rates or transatlantic migration. History is not just about famous people and public events, but also about making sense out of the present. People on all sides of an issue mine old stories for inspiration, enlightenment, or confirmation, shaping what later generations know.Historians have experience sifting through competing evidence and re-creating past events from fragments of information. One example is Mae West, a character known for her misbehavior and her ability to fill even the blandest lines with sexual innuendo. Historical research is a bit like detective work, trying to distinguish credible accounts from wishful thinking. However, serious history is forged in the tumult of change, and historians must explore the things that get left out when a person becomes an icon. Ulrich reflects on the importance of making history, acknowledging that people make history through various means, including physical actions, diary entries, letters, and writing letters. They also highlight the role of history-making in passing on gossip, saving old records, and naming places. Like the Historian Gerda Lerner emphasizes that all humans are practicing historians, and their stories are as natural as breathing. People not only live their lives but also create records and turn others' lives into books or slogans.
