Module Seven: America from the 1960s to 1980s Rebecca Beirne Unitek College Contemporary History-411B Professor T. Roka September 20, 2023 The Cold War affected domestic policy in two ways: socially and economically. The intensive indoctrination of the American people led to a regression of social reforms especially regarding civil rights, labor unions, working conditions, and women's concerns (Koshy, 2019). Three events heralded the end of the Cold War: the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the reunification of Germany in 1990 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Each was brought about or shaped by the demands and actions of ordinary Europeans, who were determined to instigate change. When Mikhail Gorbachev assumed the reins of power in the Soviet Union in 1985, no one predicted the revolution he would bring. A dedicated reformer, Gorbachev introduced the policies of glasnost and perestroika to the USSR. Gorbachev hoped these changes would be enough to spark the sluggish Soviet economy. Freedom, however, is addictive (Nehring, 2018). The 1960s was one of the most tumultuous and divisive decades in world history. The era
was marked by the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and antiwar protests, countercultural movements, political assassinations and the emerging "generation gap." In the 1980s, a new conservatism arose in social, economic and political life, characterized by the policies of the U.S. President Ronald Reagan and the U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. For some, the 1960s and 1970s had been a troubling time that undermined Americans’ confidence in their fellow citizens and in their government (Koshy, 2019). References: Koshy, S. (2019).
