He believed outsiders as barbaric. They had tea + raw silk. Ancient China was self-sufficient. And ambassadors represent their country. The ambassador to Great Britain was McCartney. And gilmary represented/had a perspective from Great britain. -maybe the british were trying to show off, Chinese are hard to please, british are desperate. And he is also trying to display arrogance. And this is an example of propaganda = (makes a cartoon to make another place look bad). Opium is a drug that is illegal and is a pain reliever and you could consider it a type of medicine. Also highly addictive and can make you unstable, they hid these secrets so they can weaken china to imperialise them. Lin Zexu had a goal to eliminate opium in China and was a Chinese diplomat. He also made rehabs to help get rid of the after effect on opium. They had small ports in India to give opium to china. Opium is made from a poppy plant. Many people got arrested for using opium and overusing it which led to the 1st opium war. Great Britain's military had a more powerful navy and army due to the advanced technology they had. resources=money all of that equals power but China did not have a strong military. Due to this chinese people started to rebel many other countries involved in the 2nd opium war due to the seen as a weak target and many people want a piece of china and for the next 100 years china was looked down upon.
